There is plenty of room in the PC space for more competitors. Steam has the advantage of being a known name and known sales and a wide library of games. Along with big names advertising Steam such as Counter Strike and DOTA. I can see Xbox doing well on PC as long as Microsoft supports it but I do not see it wiping out Steam.

Plenty of room? Well, Steam get 95% of the sales, so it doesn't look like there is a lot of room. Steam is a know name, but so was Netscape. But the library can help to maintain users.

Counter Strike and DOTA are big names, but so is Halo, Gears, Forza and MS can moneyhat 3rd parties like Tomb Raider. They can be the dirtiest player in the game when they want!

Origin entered the market and they seem to be doing alright and there is also Desura and GOG. They're nowhere near as big as Steam but it looks like they can manage in their own way, so I can't see why MS wouldn't be able to do the same.

I also don't really see Halo, Gears or Forza coming to PC, I think they will remain on Xbox since those are pretty big name exculsives for the platform. Tomb Raider might be exculsive to their service or it might come out on Steam like Halo: Spartan Assault which started off on the Windows Store and then got released on Steam. We'll know by the end of the year I suppose.

I doubt it. This isn't the first time MS has tried to make a console-like experience on PC. It didn't go well last time, and although this looks like a more concerted effort, there's still an amount of mistrust surrounding MS over GFWL and Steam has a ridiculous user base now. It's going to be difficult for MS to get back that market share when users have the majority of their library tied to their Steam account.

The good thing about PC though, you can have multiple services. I use Steam for most third-parties and Origin/uPlay for exclusives.

Let me think. Nope.

Nopetynopenope.

No. GfWL didn't do a thing, and neither will Xbox. Valve has already established its position as the go-to place for PC games. Most of the people using the new Xbox service will be there because of exclusives, and there won't be too many of them.

Also, the OP was wrong about Steam having too few games on platforms other than Windows. The library is actually pretty good and expanding. Sure, many key titles are still missing, but Linux and Mac support are getting increasingly common.

Having just read the title: No. Dont be ridiculous.

What it will do is give the Xbox brand more exposure to PC users that upgrade. This might just lead to more sales.

Why? MS already sells apps. Why would they let Valve sell games if they can do the same and get all the money? It's all about the mahney!!

MS does not control all games.  They only have control over the games they publish and/or develop and/or money hat. They can ban the sale of their own games on Steam just like EA with Origin.  So, at most, we will have an Origin-like level of competition.

That being said, if they remain competitive in terms of price and in terms of being an attrative alternative to steam for publishers and developers, then Steam could have some real competition.

I can't see that happening at all tbh, people say this about some other competitor when they get hold of a new toy or marketing tactic, people instantly go into "MS/Sony/Nintendo/PC is DOOMED!!!11" without looking properly into the past, present and the future (who ever wants to wait for the future though when we can apparently see into it and pull numbers out of our asses though?).

Valve will still go strong with Steam and MS will partly be strong with W10, in the hopes it doesn't pull a Windows 8 and doesn't fuck up any more than they already have with their "PC gaming" offerings from their recent event (goody I get the privy to buy an expensive console that looses exclusives to the PC I already own and I get to stream the less exclusive sub par games to my already powerful PC and enjoy the sufferable lag).

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Steam isn't going any where and I don't think MS thinks that either. In Phil Spencer's presentation he actually launches the game on Steam and talks about how well Steam works on Windows 10.

Steam is Steam and will still be a leading platform for PC games. The Windows 10/Xbox thing has little bearing on it. I'm a console gamer, but if I bought a PC to game on, it would be for PC games like Eve Online or SWTOR.

Lolwat? Steam will still dominate while this app will be used by Xbox gamers

Ofcourse it doesn't. They can both coincide after all; one doesn't mean the end of the other. I know I'll keep using Steam anyway!

Also, please don't just post one word responses. Put a little more in it, explain your viewpoint.
