Ive explained it a million times here:

Xbox wanted to be the first all digital console. Consoles(more specifically their games), unlike PC's(build your own for a gaming rig), need retail space. Console users are used to trading in games. Publishers want used killed or they want a cut.

MS tried to appease all three. Consoles traditionally offer very little to retailers. When I worked in retail the Xbox 360/PS4 was only making the store like $8-$10 per sold. The money for retailers is in games($20ish per $60 game when I worked in retail). With the old X1 model MS could still have your console/games get shelf space but still be an all digital product. You could also appease users that want physical(even though you were buying a license with a generic install disk)

Console users are still used to trading in games. Stores like gamestop wouldn't carry X1 either due to the no used thing that Steam does. Lets not forget the vast majority of the gaming industry wants used sales dead, or in another case, they want a cut(because they are assholes) of used sales.

24 hour checks were necessary to keep people from buying a game, installing the license, going offline, trading in the game(license) and continuing to play the game offline. That would become a massive problem. Buy a game at $60, install, go offline, trade in game for $35 a day later.

X1 tried to solve the problem of appeasing publishers(who I think the main culprit in the whole thing is), retail sellers and end users. Their idea was not a bad one for what they were trying to accomplish.

Sony probably got the same set of demands from publishers and told them to fuck off.

If you are asking what they were thinking with kinect, I don't have that answer, likely Don Mattrick didn't want to have his baby be a failure.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

I don't blame Sony for being arrogant after the PS1 and PS2. I don't blame Nintendo for being arrogant after the Wii and DS. I do blame Microsoft for being arrogant after having one good generation but by no means a dominant one.

i don't believe for 1 second that the family share plan described by an anonymous guy on reddit was the plan for xbox one. A) it sounded too good to be true which means it was too good to be true. B) if it was true they would have countered all the bad press around the 24 hour checkin with details of the family share plan to explain why such stupidity was "worth it".

family share was like ID@xbox,.. an idea created after they realized they had completely fucked themselves over with horrible ideas and was facing complete market extinction if they didn't change fast.

ms was motivated by greed. they thought they were more important than they were and could bully the industry in order to gain more power, influence, and money. they were wrong. they were arrogant.

They'd trebled their sales and won the two biggest markets. Putting up that much of a fight against the PS2's successor they had every right to be arrogant.

If you think about it though. Both the PS4 and Xbox One are "all digital" consoles anyway. Even if you own the physical discs, absolutely nothing runs from them. 100% of it is installed to HD upon first use for every single title. All your doing is installing from disc rather than downloading. Thats the only difference.

Yes they relaxed the DRM policies somewhat but we have moved from retail to digital already in reality by what has been mentioned above.

That was in no small part due to all of the missteps Sony made with the PS2's successor. And then Microsoft went and made the same mistake as Sony by trying to dictate to consumers what they want rather than listening to what they actually want.

It's odd to think that one earns the right to be arrogant. Arrogance is always a mistake, but sometimes it is an understandable one. In this case I just don't see it. Even at its peak Xbox remained largely an Anglosphere phenomenon, leaving Microsoft with a lot of room for improvement still. Now they'll have to work their asses off just to get back to where they once were.

How anyone supported what they were trying for and even now still thinks it is the future baffles me. It's as if people hold such loyalties that they care not for their ownership rights whatsoever. What other industry do you have consumers willingly giving up ownership rights?

So why is this the future for games? No physical, no 2nd hand market, no lending to friends and family, etc...

Why would anyone WANT this to be the future? You don't need to try and destroy retail to move forward with digital. Their entire plan was 100% anti-consumer. They don't give a rat's ass about their userbase and they showed it clear as day.

If any industry has been whiny about used sales its the gaming industry. They have already eliminated the retail PC market but(if you read my comment above) consoles are a different animal

This is everything the publisher/shareholder side of the industry wants. If the consumer has no other options restricted digital it is. I certainly think we will see it in a gen or 2.

That is a scary thought and I hope people continue to push away from it as it does the consumer no service. What is it about the gaming industry that makes them believe they are entitled to a share of what I make when I resell a game or when a 2nd hand shop sells the game? I bought it, it belongs to me. Any money I make from it afterwards is mine as they already got their cut when I purchased it.

I can resell a car, a movie, a book, a CD, my dining room table, etc... but somehow THEY believe they are the ones who deserve a chunk of a resell. I hate it. I'm just glad this gen is safe and hopefully next gen as well. Growing up with gaming it just feels like they are actively trying to spoil things for everyone.
