Forums - Microsoft - In hindsight, what exactly was MS trying to achieve with their original Xbox One policies?

What was MS's plan?

Their plans were good for... 53 23.35%

They were pure evil tryin... 150 66.08%

Yo Mama 24 10.57%

Total:227

1. They were making a plan for the future, but there were problems. One is that it involved a physical console with hardware inside of it. If they went towards a full digital experience with full streaming they wouldn't have had these problems.

2. They forced kinect to be involved to the point that it gimped the hardware itself. Too many launch games were held back and as a result the entire launch suffered.

3. Price for console. If they had ditched the console altogether they wouldn't have had to sell the whole thing for $500. They could have sold it for $99 and included a controller. They also could have taken away the XBL requirement since every system requires internet. It would also be part of the perceived value.

It looks like Sony will be doing this with PS5 before MS can finish their vision for the digital future. I think MS unveiled their console dream 2 years early. By this point in november I bet that a console-less machine would have been perfectly feasible and even acceptable by then.

Basically, they saw gamestop and best buy and walmart taking in lots of money from used game sales and decided that they wanted to control that income.
That's really all there is to it.

MS wanted gamestop and all those used game retailers to use their azure cloud system to control used games, wherein they would get a cut of every used game purchase. Literally the entire idea behind the x1 is to support this system. It would have been a disaster. When you think about it, it would have upped all used game prices because retailers would still want their cuts and not lose money on them, users wouldn't be able to trade on ebay etc, and it would've just thrown the whole market into chaos.

I don't think anything would have happened except them leaving the console business. The only way it would have hurt the industry is if people chose the Xbone. I seriously doubt that would have happened. Everyone would have bought PS4's instead and Sony would have allowed used games to continue like they are which would have left MS with ZERO leverage.

They would have reversed course, or gone out of business.

It was arrogance. I don't blame them for being arrogant after the 360 lol

Being the lowest selling console of the generation, with a 1 year head start, and only really selling anywhere close to PS3 because Sony shot itself in the dick by pissing off the customer base (which should have been an object lesson for MS going into gen 8, which they clearly did not learn) made them arrogant?

Hell I hate to think how arrogant they would become if they actually did significantly better than the competition. One good reason to hope that never happens. The shit they would pull if they became as market dominant in consoles as they are in PC. *shudders*

Winning the US which is the hardest and most prized market made them arrogant. Think about it. They beat the Wii for gods sake. That's no small feat.
