In hindsight, what exactly was MS trying to achieve with their original Xbox One policies?

I don't blame Sony for being arrogant after the PS1 and PS2. I don't blame Nintendo for being arrogant after the Wii and DS. I do blame Microsoft for being arrogant after having one good generation but by no means a dominant one.

They'd trebled their sales and won the two biggest markets. Putting up that much of a fight against the PS2's successor they had every right to be arrogant.
