Ive explained it a million times here:

Xbox wanted to be the first all digital console. Consoles(more specifically their games), unlike PC's(build your own for a gaming rig), need retail space. Console users are used to trading in games. Publishers want used killed or they want a cut.

MS tried to appease all three. Consoles traditionally offer very little to retailers. When I worked in retail the Xbox 360/PS4 was only making the store like $8-$10 per sold. The money for retailers is in games($20ish per $60 game when I worked in retail). With the old X1 model MS could still have your console/games get shelf space but still be an all digital product. You could also appease users that want physical(even though you were buying a license with a generic install disk)

Console users are still used to trading in games. Stores like gamestop wouldn't carry X1 either due to the no used thing that Steam does. Lets not forget the vast majority of the gaming industry wants used sales dead, or in another case, they want a cut(because they are assholes) of used sales.

24 hour checks were necessary to keep people from buying a game, installing the license, going offline, trading in the game(license) and continuing to play the game offline. That would become a massive problem. Buy a game at $60, install, go offline, trade in game for $35 a day later.

X1 tried to solve the problem of appeasing publishers(who I think the main culprit in the whole thing is), retail sellers and end users. Their idea was not a bad one for what they were trying to accomplish.

Sony probably got the same set of demands from publishers and told them to fuck off.

If you are asking what they were thinking with kinect, I don't have that answer, likely Don Mattrick didn't want to have his baby be a failure.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.
