Forums - Nintendo - Why the Death of Nintendo Would Do Gaming Zero Favors

I don't want Nintendo to die. I want them to turn into a development ONLY studio.

All you hardcore nintendo fan boys that praise them as innovative are completely wrong. In my opinion, the last good nintendo console was the SNES. When they refused to keep up with the times and switch to disks, they sealed their fate with the N64. Then the next 3 consoles were slightly cheaper than their competition-- but drastically underpowered hardware.

This last holiday season shows how Nintendo somehow thinks of themselves a the apple of gaming --- selling an overpriced product, aiming for profit per unit rather than quantity. I honestly considered purchasing the WiiU due to Nintendo's aim at family and kids games... but I cannot justify paying $300 for a device that has maybe 3 games that i would want to buy, and often cannot even run ports from the last generation properly.

My gaming dream is that the Xbox dies in flames, and Microsoft returns to PC / a gaming service; and that Sony and Nintendo also turn into gaming services. I absolutely LOATHE MS for their anti cross platform play stance, but I still want to be able to play "xbox exclusives" (PC also) with my friends without being forced into their hardware. Likewise, I want to be able to play sony and nintendo software on my personal choice of a machine.

Wrong Gamecube was more powerful than ps2. but Ps2 had dvd support and full disks.

No one argues for a total withdrawal. We just don't want to be taxed extra to play their games, Going third party in the stationary console business is what gaming needs to pull out of creative depression.

lol you neglect to mention that Analog sticks that Nintendo came up with for the N64. Or Rumble. Or the triggers in the GCN. Or how the Wavebird made wireless controllers become the norm. But no Nintendo doesn't innovate.

I hope you realize that more powerful hardware is not innovation.

I don't want Nintendo dead, I want them to adapt and do better, and to stop thinking that the gaming world should revolve around them instead of the other way around.

What does this even mean?

Nintendo should never ever go 3rd party and if the people out there that are calling for the death/going 3rd party cant understand, that nintendo games look and feel the way they do. Because nintendo knows the in's and out's of their system, going 3rd party would mean that their games would suffer, because they dont know how the system's of the other companies work and how to get the most out of it. Nintendo saved the video game industry and gave it a 2nd chance at life, it always amazes me how little respect nintendo gets for that fact alone.
Also the reason 3rd party companies dont release their games on nintendo systems, is a simple as this pure fact.....they dont kiss their butts , like m$ and sony do.

I agree with Skullwalker again. If anything, I don't want any of the 3 companies to go down and I definitely don't want companies becomming 3rd-party just for the sake of having their games that you want on another companies console you own.

None of the big 3 should die. Absolutely no one would benefit from that, I promise you. They all keep each other on their toes and the market continues to be healthy because of it.

Honestly though it would bring a smile to my face if Sony went under. I'm sick, I know. Either that or they could improve their business practices and customer service. Either is good.

This is actually how I feel about Microsoft. Like, I don't want them to go under because ultimately them existing helps the market, but at the same time I feel like they have no business being in video games and they don't really care about it beyond monetary value. Albeit, Sony has been following in Microsoft's footsteps regarding a lot of things, and that has disappointed me beyond belief.

im not sure if it realy helps the maket to have the twins. sure, the prices are lower, but thats realy all we get out of it. we wouldnt lose anything if sony or m$ stops to make consoles. but we could win something, 3rd partys would have to support nintendo, that means the surving twin would have to do more.

I'm not so sure it helps the market to have the twins either. I think the graphical and power arms race between Sony and MS is what led to $500 and $600 launch prices and so many publishers and developers going belly up the past decade because they just don't have the resources to keep up with the drastic spike in the cost of doing business. Think what you will of Wii being "the shovelware machine," but it was many times the safest place for devs to put out niche games that were never meant to sell like gangbusters or try out new ideas with less fear of doing irrepairable damage if sales don't meet expectations.

I would hate to be a developer in this day and age, where the industry is like a minefield. One wrong step, and that's all she wrote for you.

You are right... this is why the WiiU's graphics are behind PS4/XB1/PC. Because they know the ins and outs of their behind the curve hardware.

You realize that more and more engines can handle the "close to the metal" code while simultaenously supporting multiple devices by default?

Lastly, do you realize that if nintendo went 3rd party they'd adapt to the hardware they are selling to.

Nintendo is very anti-consumer when it comes to their region-locking policy. Also having the New Nintendo 3DS be able to play games that the older models cannot is a huge middle finger to 40 million + 3DS owners. But you're right Nintendo always does right by consumers. /sarcasm.

Region lock is a hassle for some people but the majority of people don't really import games so it isn't as big of a problem as people like to make it out to be. The New 3DS thing has been something that has happened since the Gameboy Color and the DSi. I don't recall seeing people rioting in the streets over it back then or now.

And I still stand by what I said. I said fair shake and not right by customers. MK8 DLC price? Fair shake. DKCTF and WWHD selling for $50? Fair shake. Captain Toad selling for $40? Fair shake. Including Bayonetta 1 with Bayonetta 2? Fair shake. Full backwards compatibility and free online? Fair shake. 10% cash back on eshop purchases from launch to the end of 2014? Fair shake. Club Nintendo? Fair shake. Nintendo has been doing plenty of things that would be considered a fair shake to their customers that Sony or MS have not.

Region lock is a big deal for many people including me. Don't try to minimize the issue just because you are not affected. I do in fact remember complaining about the DSi having exclusive software but as there were never any high profile DSi exclsuive retail releases it did not turn into a big deal. I was not part of online gaming communities back in the GBC days so I could not tell you how people reacted back then. Still that is a poor argument, just becuase they were anti-consumer before does not mean it is okay to continue doing it.

I agree that online play should be free but providing the service has costs. In regards to backwards compatibility I agree that is best for gamers. I am disappointed that neither Xbox One or PS4 are backwards compatible but the lack of that feature is reflected in the price of the consoles that would be higher if it were included. Consumers have responded to the lower price points. The PS3 sold much better after Sony cut cost due to removing BC (Though my 60GB PS3 is full BC). Nintendo eventually dropped Gamecube backwards compatibility for the Wii and GBA BC for the DSi. I doubt it will happen with the Wii U though becuase the two systems are so similar.

Nintendo is not the only one to relase games at prices lower than $60. Sony lowered the price of The Last of Us Remastered before launch. Games like Puppeteer and Sly 4 were budget releases. Sony also made all the Starhawk map DLC free so the community would not be fractured. Sony also the only one that has Cross buy/ Cross Save/ Cross Play for some Vita/PS3/PS4 titles so you don't have to buy the same game more than once. Sony also spearheaded the movement to give PS3 gamers the chance to upgrade to PS4 digital versions for only $10. I call all of those fair shakes.

I am not saying Nintendo is worse than any other company or that Sony is better but I disagree that Nintendo is the only one who puts consumers first and that without them greed would run rampant.

I'm pretty sure the lack of backwards compatibility and an online paywall are much bigger deals to the masses than region locking. I'd be surprised if the latter affects even five percent of gamers.

What it says. Nintendo's attitude with the Wii and the Wii U was that they should be building it for them and them exclusively, in their minds, if a 3rd party company wanted to get a game out for the Wii U it was entirely their problem, they expected 3rd party to give an unnecesary amount of effort into a simple port, they expected them to adapt to their rules, and for these companies to be forced to follow Nintendo's saying whenever Nintendo felt like doing something.

I'm now filled with determination.
