No, gamers won't forgive them their casuals years

I do. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Metroid Prime 3, Skyward Sword, Punch-Out!!, Kirbys Epic Yarn, Rhythm Heaven Fever, Wario Land: Shake It etc... They never ignored their fanbase during the Wii era...

Very interesting answer. Since when does "gamers" = Nintendo fans?

So all Nintendo fans are casual gamers? Why are you saying gamers wont forgive them then? I mean if they never catered to gamers to begin with...

4.Nintendo let all the money they got in the Wii/DS era just slip away. Sure they have around 10B$ in assets right now, but they had like, what? 80B$ in the Wii/DS era? Why'd they just waste all that money? They could've used it to handle losses like Sony and MS do, they could've used it to hire better R&D devs, they could've used it to open more 1st party studios! They let all the money they made slip away for crying out loud!

No no, they never had that much assets.  Nintendo's assets peaked at 1,337 Billion Yen in 2010, and dropped to 1,130 Billion Yen as of September.  So they have 207 Billion Yen less than their peak from Wii/DS.  About half of that decrease comes from the buy back of Yamauchi family's shares of Nintendo.

You're thinking about their stock valuation, but that is not assets.  Stock valuation is based on speculation.  When Nintendo was printing money with Wii/DS, Nintendo's future valuation was many times their asset value.  Now that Nintendo has struggled to make profits, investors price the shares at very low future value.

No one listens. Third party is the key. Nintendo lost out because of their always rocky relationship with them.

It's not worth the effort, though. However we wish to assign blame, we know a few things

1) Easy portability is not enough for Nintendo to get 3rd party support, as evidenced by all the 2012/13/14 PS360 games that skipped over Wii U, despite the console being partially designed with easy portability from 360 in mind.

2) For almost 20 YEARS now, gamers have been trained to know that the mainstream third party hits are best bought (or only available) on non-Nintendo platforms. So mere parity is not going to overcome an entire generation of perception.

Nintendo would have to moneyhat EXCLUSIVITY for significant, heavy-hitting third party franchises, an exclusive FF, an exclusive, say, Dragon Age, an exclusive Fallout, an exclusive Grand Theft Auto. They would have to get games that absolutely could not be ignored and would have to have them one hundred percent exclusive to the Nintendo environment (otherwise people would go elsewhere! even with, say, advertising exclusivity or something). That is really the only way Nintendo would have out of their trap, and is that really worth all of the money and effort, when Nintendo has other options?

I'd focus on getting mobile third party support, myself. It's an untapped field and one with major quality control issues that could use a guiding hand like Nintendo's to help sort out, and a way to get back in touch with the western third parties without having to twist their arms just for table scraps, as we saw with Wii U.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

"Gamers" are just a much wider audience than Nintendo fans. And yes, Nintendo was on the forefront of core gaming until the Wii. Many people who had awesome core gaming experiences with past Nintendo hardware no longer see Nintendo as being able to provide similar experience, hence the sales of the current generation.

So the the N64 and GC was on the forefront in their eras?

Also if they believe that Nintendo was casual with the Wii, then the WiiU should be for them then. Its more focused on core gamers.

Well with the Wii they tackled the casual market, now they need something that's not causal, not niche, and not hardcore (unless they suck up to 3rd parties)

XBOX ONE/Wii U/3DS/PC

RIP Iwata 12/6/1959-7/11/2015

Thanks for all the great memories!

No one thought the wii was going to be what it was, so sure, I think that nintendo could do it again. Plus, sony was in 3rd place for last gen, so ms beat em too. Last place for.Sony last gen wasn't bad.

No. Not so long as the grandfathers of gaming are run by actual grandfathers.
