No one thought the wii was going to be what it was, so sure, I think that nintendo could do it again. Plus, sony was in 3rd place for last gen, so ms beat em too. Last place for.Sony last gen wasn't bad.

If they get serious, and release a powerful next-gen console with a standard controller, then it's possible they can reach the top again. That will get third-parties on board.

Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, The Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Grand Theft Auto, Madden, FIFA, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tekken, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, Minecraft, Tomb Raider, etc.

All on one console. It's a recipe for success.

Agreed. But it would take more than games. You'd also have to put NOA in charge and let them design the machine and be in control of ALL PR everywhere outside of Japan. This is how Sony has managed to do so well with home consoles. They always have known how to sell to the West.

If Nintendo went that rout AND got all the GTAs and CODs and had a robust online feature set? I don't see why they wouldn't dominate NES style again. I mean, who the in hell wouldn't want a PS4 that plays Nintendo's IP?

nintendo could sell everything they have and they would not have money to buy 10 % of sony

sony is in danger of a buyout? ha ha ha ha ha ha where did you get that from ha ha ha

''especially as Sony Pictures unravels now in the wake of the hack'' ha ha ha ha oh god they were hacked once and u are trying to make it like sony pictures is doomed, forgeting the rights of spiderman, 007.

and i wont even talk about sony music

sony worth $148 B

nintendo $15 B

lol

What are you talking about? Sony's market cap is $22.51bn. Nintendo has $10.5bn in available cash so they could technically buy 40-50% of Sony. Of course nobody wants to buy Sony cause of their awful situation. Even long term investors are leaving.

I will agree with you though that Sony pictures is quite profitable.

lol

market capital is different than assets.

nintendo will buy assets not market capital which may chance each hour.

???? they are in danger or not?

They are a large company with some very strong assets, buried under a mountain of liabilities both fiscal and metaphorical. In the West, this would be a prime opportunity for "creative destruction", e.g. somebody buying them out, liquidating the dead weight, and focusing on the strong suits. Japan has several safeguards in place to prevent takeovers, however.

Nobody's seriously suggesting that Sony will be bought out, but the company is not well by any definition, and this too needs to be acknowledged.

hey you did. :P

but anyway sony is not on red

they made over $1b in profit, i think only the tv and phone division are bleeding money. everything else is fine.

i dont even know why we are talking about this

its off-topic.

Honest question, when did sony post a profit of 1 billion? All I've ever seen is they post loss after loss. Also, wasn't so y, at their peak, worth 220 billion or so? Aren't they worth around 20 billion now?  I thought it was well known that sony has been bleeding money like no other for the last 10 years. The losses they posted in their last report was massive compared to their own projections, we're they not? I want sony to bounce back, I really do, but being blind to their reality isn't going to make it not true. Sony is, and has been, in huge trouble.

Nintendo messed up with the specs on the Wii u badly so it'll be hard surviving with their 1 party games alone.

The question is why not? They did it once, it can happen again.

I wonder about the Xbox though, I would like to see it on top once, just to see people squirm in anguish.

they did it thrice.

Short answer: no.

That's from the standpoint that most, including the OP are approaching this question from which is to say "If Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony are competing in the same home console market, will Nintendo dominate that market for the duration of the hardware generation in terms of units sold and revenue generated?"

Again; no.

The flip side that most probably aren't thinking of is a potential future in which Nintendo is the last of these companies to be manufacturing and selling dedicated game consoles as Sony and Microsoft continue to evolve further into services and content based entertainment businesses. Yes, they will all be selling games (or access to games) within a walled environment, but the hardware will likely be less of the focus in the future, whereas Nintendo is most likely to remain a toy manufacturing company.

In such a future, Nintendo may well be the only company selling video game consoles (so 100% of the console market), but not the only company selling games within a walled environment and not the company producing the most revenue from games and related services.

Sure, why not?

I would say even as soon as next generation.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I think they will create a revolutionary home console again...when? We don't know that.
BUT, what we do know, is that they are currently working on a new console whilst developing a huge software line-up for the Wii U (Starfox,The Legend of Zelda,Splatoon,Yoshi's Wooly World,Kirby and the Rainbow Curse,Mario Party 10,etc.)! Let's just hope they can create another "Nintendo Revolution" with their new hardware...

Nintendo will one day return to 100% market share because Playstation and Xbox will just be software for PCs and smart TVs.
