There's always a possibility, but I don't see it happening until they change a lot of their core business practices.

Nintendo needed to wait 10 years to see the crown again with the Wii. So perhaps there's going to be a similar transition again.

This is hard to predict but it cpuld be possible if they start listening and adapting to current gaming to win over the masses., create new and interesting ip, gain back respect and business with third party and last but not least, get rid of there arogance. Stop being so corporate and atleast act like your doing the consumer good.

Yes but only if they get aggressive. Meaning all the great things about PS4, Xbox one, need to have something to counter or equal it's value.

It mostly depends on what Nintendo wants to do ...

If their next console is anything like the WII U or Gamecube then they will never see glory again on that front. The only reason why they were able to succeed with the WII was because of a given opportunity to right their wrongs. For them the strategy that revolved around both WII and DS was basically a light at the end of the tunnel ...

Going forward the business is changing and im not sure that Nintendo will present a console in a traditional way. I believe they will release a handheld and console as a part of the same product line just different versions. I could definetely see the combined sales of that competing against next box or sony if things go well for nintendo. Just not sure we would combine the sales numbers together or if we would seperate the sales numbers.

You don't seem to be looking at the whole picture. There is something called a balance sheet. This shows a company's total assets and total liabilities. Its easy to say "Sony is worth $150bn" but that's not the full story. Sony's total liabilities are a massive $127bn. 

There are 2 ways to buy a company. Asset sales or share sales. Share sales are less complex than asset sales and represent the actual value of the firm. You see, aquiring shares mean that you get both the assets and the liabilties of a corporation. 

In an asset sale, there is a transfer of individual assets. So in this case, Sony would have to keep the liabilties for itself and pay them off. Why would they want to do that?! And moreover, there are only a few very valuable assets and patents that Sony owns. Those would certainly not be for sale. 

And why do you think share prices jump on the news of a firm takeover? Cause shareholders want to make a big profit by selling those shares. When a firm is trying to fully buyout another firm, they go for share takeovers not asset takeovers. And the sellers or owners, prefer share takeovers because there is a lower amount of tax on income gained from a share takeover as compared to an asset takeover. 

I for one honestly can't see it happening.

Let's look at their past...they had a monopoly. They enjoyed much better support for their console in a later generation.

With WII they found a segment in the market that nobody else even knew was there.

For them to do it again...for ANY console to do that again is very very hard to imagine.

Consoles are evolving to so much more than game machines.  Nintendo is going to have to evolve their console period if they expect to sell more than like twenty of them in the next generation.  The light user, cute idea players all have their Nintendo's now and that market is gone.  People want HD, they want apps, they want movies, they want access to TV show sites instead of paying for cable and satellite.  They don't even want to play guitars and drums anymore. :(


A bigger question to you is: What would have happened to Sony/PS3 if Microsoft hadn't been dumb with trying HD-DVD. A BLURAY in a 360 would have dramatically changed the landscape by 10's of millions in my opinion. For forever you could buy a PS3 with a BLURAY for cheaper than most solo BLURAY's, I have three friends who have never even played a single game on their PS3's as they came unbundled and they never felt the need to buy a game. They either watch movies directly or stream to it.

its pretty simple; Nintendo needs to make a pure console with regular controllers and nothing insanely innovative. make an easy platform for 3rd parties to flock to and put their multi-plat titles on. that coupled with Nintendo's strong IP's could make for a winning formula. I know it sounds simple but frankly when is the last time Nintendo took a simple and pretty route? the Gamecube failed because of those little mini disks, the Wii succeeded (but was a mega risk), and now the Wii U fails because its harder to develop for and has the quirky touchpad controllers (also the 3rd parties already left a while ago I guess)

but seriously I think a lot of Nintendo fans like me just want great GAMES and regular hardware. why can't we have a traditional controller and decent spec system? why do there have to be gimmicks? Nintendo could pull back in the 3rd parties and dominate if they would just stop trying to think outside of the box so much

3rd parties are afraid to take risks with Nintendo because they know that Nintendo is more concerned with its own IPs and 'ideas' than anything else. which makes sense! but it doesn't exactly scream "MAKE GAMES FOR MY SYSTEM"

would love to have a simple controller but comfortable (like the Gamecube one) and a competitively spec-ed system and play all of Nintendo's best titles on it. I don't understand why they can't do that.

at any rate, Nintendo is not stupid and will either succeed with another Wii like gimmick or go to a more straightlined approach and make a higher spec system that is simply for pure gaming. I think what they don't understand as much lately is that gamers care more about the software than the hardware. I don't care about special controllers. I care about the games. and in reality weird controllers and Nintendo taking 'risks' like that distract from the games in my opinion
