I doubt it. As long as PlayStation is there Nintendo has little chance of winning. If PlayStation goes under its users will migrate to PC and Xbox, so Nintendo won't gain much.

Actually PS brand won't easily go under, Sony could, but PS would be taken over by a stronger company and it'd become financially stronger than now, with wider possibilities, not having to help keeping afloat a sinking giant with part of its profits.

Yeah but that could be bad for the PlayStation brand because not many companies would give their devs creative freedom like Sony. So it might not remain as strong then.

The best options to let it free enough could be a joint-venture amongst all the other companies of Mitsui, the keiretsu Sony belongs to, or Sumitomo, a huge allied keiretsu that already has joint-ventures with Mitsui. Or maybe even both keiretsus, if I'm not wrong Sony is the only company in any of the two with strong interests in gaming, so the PS brand could be let free to expand without creating troubles to any other member.

I don't now what keiretsu is, but it seems good for the PS brand. The best thing to happen would be for SCE to become a separate company and merge with SOE. That can do wonders for the brand.

They are almost guaranteed next gen to win the hardware race... only because Sony and Microsoft talking about cloud based systems and no hardware at home.

A Japanese kind of corporate group

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keiretsu

The way they are run could benefit Sony TV division too, synergies would allow it to survive as premium brand, while both keiretsus have electronics brands that at least outside of Japan are a lot smaller than Sony in TV premium segment and they could completely take over the value segment, where Sony can't compete without sacrificing profits.

They can win, but they will need a paradigma shift for that to happen.

We already know, from Miyamoto's own words, that Nintendo will focus on the core gamer.
But how they do it is key aspect to that change.

First and foremost, they need to change how they are perceived.
In people's minds they are a kids/family oriented company; they make unique games that no one else does. And that is exactly part of the problem: the games they make and the games 3rd parties make (with a few exceptions) seem like worlds apart.
And if anything gamers have shown that it's the 3rd party world that want to live in for the most of their time: Halos, Gears of War, Uncharteds, Assassin's Creeds, Forzas, Gran Turismos, Call of Dutys, Destinys, etc., etc. These are the games core gamers want the most.

If Nintendo really wants to be perceived they can't just throw a Bayonetta 2 once or twice a year in their line-up. They need 3rd parties kinda games on their consoles, exclusive to their console.
What i mean is, for every Mario there's a Halo, for every Zelda, a Uncharted, etc. etc.
They need to seriously expand their offerings with genres that have proven time and time again that are what core gamers are looking for.
Just having ports will no longer convence gamers because this is a race between 3 companies, not two. And the mass market is not going to fully support 3 consoles - and they never did - if there isn't at least one that is completely different (like Wii was).

If they can't create a line-up of exclusive titles that covers the genres that core gamers like, then, it doesn't matter how much they talk to 3rd parties and how many titles they bring to Nintendo's consoles. If all gamers see in Nintendo's side is ports, they just won't bother.

And the thing is, they can do it if they streamline their production. If they do that, they'll have enough manpower to try develop those new franchises and show people that thei console isn't just Mario, Zelda, DK + a few core gamers' games.
they'll show that they have a diverse line-up every year and that is what will attract gamers, and consequently, developers, who will see that there's a market for their games in Nintendo's world.

Also, account systems, a great looking console, will go a long way!

I love the gamepad for the space between my left and right hand while holding it alone.

I completely hate that I have to have my hands in front of myself as if someone would have handcuffed me when using Xbox or PS controllers.

The wiimote is the best tho I can freely move my hands around without feeling like I have having

Do they really need to? They are profitable and that's all that matters. Sony is in the middle of imploding overall and MS investors are having arguments amongst themselves about spinning off the Xbox brand. Maybe PlayStation can survive on its own, but Xbox would probably collapse. Nintendo is the only one of the 3 that is standing on its own without government bailouts and the backing of a giant corporation.

Umm...that was Wii.  You might go and see the WiiU sales.  They're horrible turning to worse.  There's a good chance that they drop to barely above six figure sales per MONTH in the new year.

Their handheld is doing well(as there is no direct competition however cellphones are rapidly approaching game handhelds.  All it takes is one of the cellphone makers to put a decent graphics card in a phone and WII handheld business is going to cave).

I think we can all agree that as a company, they're no longer printing money like they did with WII.

Nintendo will never be back on top again. A lot of people that grew up with Nintendo moved to Sony. When they were older and had buying power they bought systems. They also had kids, who grew up on Sony. MS grabbed a chunk of that group too last gen with the well timed X360. Sony/MS are what kids are growing up on and that will move onto their kids. Nintendo got outdone in the PS1 era and I do not think they will recover from that. NIntendo has its place and sells to the Nintendo faithful and the hardcore multi console owners, but most people are raised in another camp.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.
