But see that is the thing. Pokemon always does update its game mechanics. Pretty sure Omega Ruby has Fairy type pokemon. They will have the new moves and all what not that have been added since its original release. To me the review seems to be docking the game becuase it didn't like its setting. That would be like docking Assasins Creed 4 because you are not a fan of sailing or water. your biased. And no, don't say there may be people out there like you that would like your review. If there are people out there that hate sailing/water they will ignore AC4 the moment they see a 15 second trailer. They don't need your review giving the game a bad score in order to pass it up. |
EVERYONE ARE BIASED! You're not a human being if you don't have personal preferences and opinions! There's no such thing as an objective review!
I also have to ask, did you read the review? It's docking points because there is a huge abundance of water-type pokemon which makes battles be repetetive, and because it's tedious and annoying to move in the water! It's not because this writer has a bias against water and wants it all to go away, it's because the mechanics assosiated with water are poor! So the more water there is, the more you'll have to make use of those poor mechanics, which leads to annoyance, and it should remove points dammit!
Here's the only example of an unbiased review:

Now tell me, was that a useful review? Is that the type of reviews you want?
I think you're mistaking an unbiased review for a review that matches your biased opinion. (I'm not flaming here, as I said earlier, we all have biases)

No I didn't read the review, and haven't played the first game either.
But yes he is baised. He is docking the game for its CORE MECHANIC, which is a water, island, water based game.
Be like if I reviewed AC4 and I hate ships, pirates and warm weather. Then I bitch about seeing too many pirates or having to sail.
I should NOT be reviewing the game. We need someone impartial. I LOVE Pirates and ships, so I shoudl not be reviewing AC4. The same as one who hates that shoudl not be. It takes a 15 second trailer to weed out bad reviewers. If I show someone a AC4 trailer we should be able to tell who is insanely biased one way or the other. Same with Pokemon game. It's like a Jury in Court. If I go in and instantly am like "the black guy did it" you can bet your ass I'll be off the jury panal. I'm clearly racists or biased.
Now all the trailers I have seen for this pokemon game, this seems a very water based game. I'm not a big fan of surfing in pokemon, thus I put it on my pass list from the very first trailer I saw. This reviwers should have done the same, and thus not been one to review the game. He clearly is biased before coming in.
Honestly, why did IGN think it would be a good idea to have some freelance community member conduct the review of one of the biggest franchises in gaming? She's going to get HAMMERED online because of this. People are already raiding her IGN profile and some have found her Youtube...

If a core mechanic is bad, why shouldn't they dock points because of it? Should I make a game where being crappy is a core mechanic and then expect good reviews?
The thing is, the writer has nothing against water (Or do you think she has some personal agenda against water, and wants to se all water in videogames dead?). The writer is docking points because there is a huge abundance of water-type pokemon which makes battles be repetetive, and because it's tedious and annoying to move in the water! I could just copy and paste that part from my previous comment, because you obviously didn't read it. If a mechanic is bad, then the game should lose points because of that mechanic.
Unless you want the reviewer to not care about anything in the game, I mean, obviously, if the reviewer finds out that he likes the mechanics in pokemon, then he is biased right? (If you answer no to this question, then you are a hypocrite). Thus, you can never ever have an un-biased review. Unless it's like the one in the link I gave you, which it seems you didn't bother to read either.

The line that caught my attention was this: " However, as a remake, it does represent a big missed opportunity to fix several significant balance issues and mechanical problems — the difficulty I had going back after playing the much more modern Pokémon X shows how far Pokémon games have come in 12 years." Which begs the question, should improvements to bad mechanics from the original games be made? And if they aren't made, is it valid to deduct points for that? Should mechanics be modernized in a remake? At least to the point of filtering out the worst bits and fixing the most annoying? |
Yes and Yes. Updates should be made and expected; points deducted. Otherwise it's just a graphics update which screams lazy cash grab(TLOU:R).

| pokoko said: This is an interesting thread, as is the comment section of the article. It really highlights how immature some segments of the gaming community are when something they've decided to like is criticized. I thought the review was well-written. I noted nothing egregious about it. If the text had an 8.5 attached, no one would say a word. The attempt to discredit the review by focusing on the water comments is pretty stupid but, unfortunately, it's also effective. People latch on to stuff like that without ever bothering to read or think for themselves. You can take something like that, amplify it as more important than it actually was, feed it to the mob, and they'll fall right in line. It's a shame but that's the reality. I hope the reviewer understands that and doesn't let these kind of tactics bother them. |
Jokes aside although I am gulity too of jumping to conclusions at times, and I have to admit my previous comment was rather mean. The review itself especially since it was not made by an offical staff member is pretty decent as standards for reviews go. I think a part of the problem is the summeries at the bottom of each reivew, it almost feels like those summeries are quote mining the review.
"Too much water" can sound like a ridiculous statement without any context but from what I got in the review was the reviewer's overall problem with "water" was the overall imbalance (she means more towards the end of the game) of water based Pokemon and the water navigation not being very fun. Which are points I can understand more and if phrased better in the summery perhaps could have avoided the controversy. Should reviewers have to do this? No but sadly people will jump on bandwageons if it means making a specific target look bad if the opporunity is given which I think IGN does even when they make good reviews.
I swear this is not the first time a criticism of Ruby and Sapphire was the over abundence of water (and nothing else) at the end of the game but in any case this is just one opinion not the overall word of God.

The core mechanic isn't bad though. It's just not to the reviewers liking.
It's not to my liking either. Moving in water is like being in tall grass 100% of the time. Meaning unless i use repels i'm fighting too damn often for my tastes.
But please tell me what could be improved upon for water? You hop on a pokemon and move around the water. you move around just like when on ground, your just on water. You encounter trainers the same as on land, ect. Only diffrence is as I said before, you are basically always in grass, thus always fighting. No roads to run on to ignore battles, you need to pop a repel, which if my memory serves right isn't very expensive. It tells you when it wears off and even lets you just select yes to apply a new one in seconds. hardly a hassle.
This game was obviously made with Water and Water Pokemon in mind. Should a game be docked for its theme. Should The Last of Us be docked because I'm sick of fighting zombies? Besides there are like 150-200 water pokemon alone. So even ignoring all other types of pokemon it has enough in just that type to fill an entire game.

"The mechanic is just not to the reviewers liking"
No, ofcourse it isn't. I'll ask you again, have you read the link I gave you? It's literally impossible to make a review without OPINIONS and OPINIONS are PERSONAL and based on PREFERENCES and wether you like it or not BIASES. Let's for example take Mario Galaxy. I could say that all those reviewers giving it a 100 score are biased and shouldn't be reviewing the game, because the obviously are bieased towards liking the game mechanics.
But since you basically refute logic, there is no reason for me to continue this discussion, because the very idea of an unbiased review is impossible.

Well, truthfully, it's very easy to underestimate the stupidity of the general public. No one really thinks, "omigod, people are going to lose their fucking minds because a Pokemon remake got a 7.8." I mean, for a rational human being, that just doesn't compute. I guess they could have gone out an gotten a Professional Pokemon Master or something, who would give it 9 points just for having Pokemon in the title.
It's sad that actual human beings have to wade through the crap of the internet but, really, it's fun for the rest of us to sit back and laugh at the idiots who feel the need to white knight-Pokemon, of all things, and protect it from wild criticism and evil 7.8 scores, not to mention the sheep who are complaining about a review that they haven't even read. That's pure gold.
