Why are some expecting the Mario Kart 8 bundle to boost Wii U significantly next week? After all, Wii U sold like 19k on MK8 release week lol what makes you think this bundle will boost the console MORE, especially after the game has sold 700k in Japan already?

Now don't get me wrong... I expect the bundle to sell VERY well throughout the holiday season, but I think its boost will be more modest early on... I expect around 20k for Wii U next week, mainly because Captain Toad is also releasing (even though I'm not really expecting it to do much).

Anyway, the Japanese charts have lacked excitement for a few weeks now, I'm looking forward to the next few weeks though! Next week in particular will be fierce with Call of Duty, Winning Eleven and Captain Toad releasing.

For the most part, it is just a hunch. Last year, we saw similar patterns, with Wii U performing abysmally until Nintendo launched the Wii Party U bundle, which shot the HW sales up to 26K (IIRC).

I think its reseanoble to predict a boost. Personally, I think the Wii U will be at 10k, more or less next week.

I agree there will be a boost, but I think it will be more long-term than immediate. Plus, Wii Party U was just recently released then, unlike MK8 which has been available for several months now.

I think 10k for the Wii U is likely for next week, but I think it will be a tad higher due to advertisements and the approachment of the holiday season which generally boosts Nintendo products more than others.

PS4 up three weeks in a row. COD up this week, Assassin's Creed and Dynasty warriors the week after, then 3 weeks after that is DQ and GTAV...seems that the Dreamcast is being threatened.

Vita Y/Y not looking to good for this week with last years 2000 model but a pink one and some titles come out in the coming weeks to keep its Y/Y gains in tact.

Wonder what the excuse for the 3DS this week is going to be? Down Y/Y with every major title under the sun released for it as well as four sku's along with a special SSB 3DS XL. Let me guess... supply constrained.

3DS is failing against the DS, so no surprise to see it down Y/Y. In fact, I expect after the holiday boos to be doing laughable numbers as the other hardware, but not as terrible as the non existant XOne.

you have been misled ;) he is wrong!it isnt  down but up!74k in 2013 vs 80k in 2014...!he must ignored the old 3dsxl/3ds/2ds :P

Famitsu is the same 71k this year vs 74k last year

PS4 is selling great. Just imagine how much it will do next with some japanese games.

lol, can't tell if this is sarcasm or not.

Selling 10k a week in Japan is like saying a guy who's earning a salary of $15,000 a year is doing great.

What has to bother Sony more are those Vita sales though. Man Nintendo basically castrated them when they took Monster Hunter away.

I'd like to thank the users in the first couple of pages who sensationalized a YOY decline for a console in its fourth November, for ultimately causing it to be brought to light that said decline is one of 3%.

Now it is time for my friendly, weekly reminder that the DS was down massively YOY in 2008, despite the launch of the DSi. And an extra reminder this week that when all is said and done, the 3DS will be one of the top 5 best-selling consoles of all time in Japan.

With that in mind, I humbly suggest that concerns over 3DS hardware sales be taken to more appropriate threads, such as the Weekly Global Hardware Sales and NPD threads. Because constantly criticizing the 3DS for not doing good enough at 80k while giving every other console a pat on the back for selling 1/8th that amount each week is getting a bit tiresome.

I think the consensus is that pretty much everything is doing really poorly in Japan (besides the 3DS, actually). And the discussion is highly relevant seeing the massive changes the Japanese market has undergone in the past decade or so. Comparing new devices to old ones and new markets to old ones is more or less the only way to gauge how things are holding up.

And regardless of your examples with the DSi; there is no denying that dedicated handhelds are plummeting compared to the 7th gen. How Japanese sales threads are inappropriate for this subject when Japan is the last bastion for decent handheld sales and currently heading into more and more mobile-oriented territory is beyond me.

Because comparing anything to the international phenomenon that was the DS is just looking for something to be disappointed in. And it's obvious that the "problem handheld" in Japan is not the one on its way to at least 20 million LT sales.

But reiterating weekly that the Vita isn't putting up numbers anywhere near the PSP is boring, no one does it anymore because it's just stating the obvious. Comparing the 3DS to the DS is equally boring and obvious -- and even then, what I'm seeing are people comparing the 3DS YOY sales more than that, which is nonsensical because of course the 3DS is down YOY. I was just illustrating that typically consoles peak in their third year and then decline steadily from there, and that even the mighty DS was not an exception to this trend.

Japanese sales threads are also appropriate places for discussing the massive decline of home consoles sales since last gen, but there's more optimism in this thread for the PS4 and Wii U than either of those consoles deserve.
