And they can't as they have to make money off the PS brand and for this they need to keep a "high" price to also make profit off the console itself. Their "desperation" is that there is no price cut.

Not really, even back in PS2 days it took them about  1.5 years for the first price cut and they were swimmng in cash back then.

Why lower the price and reduce the revenue when you're already crushing your competition combined? Nintendo also didnt slash the Wii price for quite some time as well

They don't need to saleswise but they also better don't because they need every cent they can get.

Here we go. What a great day for Xbox fans. Price drop for the masses and sunset overdrive getting great reviews. What a great time to own the best console of the generation. Thank you Microsoft.

Desperate times.

I would not call this desperate. Microsoft just made billions of dollars in just one quarter and they can afford to take these measures for remaining competitive. Good on them. They mean business. Conversely if they were losing billions and had to do this then we could call them desparate.

How'd that business model work out for the Zune?

name ONE company without one fail product

thats not how it works

zune was the worst ofc. and they realise quickly

Expect Sony to follow suit in 3, 2, 1...

They dont need to fall to such desperate measures yet.

TIL keeping your price because you're outselling your direct competition no matter how many stategies they come up with to spur sales (even undercutting you on price) = desperation. As opposed to following a basic economic principle.

Even though the overwhelming majority of their money (from the gaming division) has always come from software and peripherals, they "need" to make a profit off the console itself this time. Ok, I guess.

The only thing stopping me from taking the plunge is the possibility Sunset Overdrive will come to PC. That and I am buying my friends family a Wii U for Christmas so my buying funds this holiday season are limited :(

"I think it will be the HDS"-Me in regards to Nintendo's next handheld.

They don't have to drop the price to give you a price cut. All sony has to do is digitally bundle Killzone, infamous, the last of us and journey with every console sold and still sell it for $400. Its kinda easy saying pay $400 and get 4 games free. And those are all first party titles too.

And I don't understand how people don't get that he bst and fastest way to make profits from consoles is by increasing market shae as quickly as possible. If sony lost $100 on every console sold, they stand to make almost 2-3 times that amount from that gamer over the course of a year.

$50 more to go before its at the price it should have a launched at.

Hmm MS must be losing a lot of money on every Xbone sold. Constant promotions, price cuts, free games.
Heh guess they're lucky it doesn't sell that much.

Hopefully Sony doesn't counter, profits are more important to them than market share.

I don't know about "losing a lot f money", I mean nothing can really be as bad as the PS3 osing $280 on every console even when selling them at $600. If sony could brave that then MS can definately do this. And this is what they need to do.

I have always felt that becase of how quickly the PS4 pulled ahead that this would be PS2/XB pricing wars all over again. Sony will match it. Cause what you are missing is that market share = profits. And sony had already indicated that they were more interested n growing their market shae than they were making a profit on every box sold.

What all this means is that by this time next year you would be able to buy a PS4/XB1 for under$250. Really good for the industry if you ask me.

Sony of 2006 is not Sony of 2014, if they would have to lose 300$ on a console sold today, they would be bankrupt by 2016. It lost them billions back then. Sony is past the razor blade business model time, that's why PS4's philosophy was very different than PS3's and for the better in their current financial condition.

If I'm reading this right, you say MS can take big losses on Xbone? Well sure they can, but there is a finite patience of shareholders who will have years of division bringing their profits down, someone will finally say fuck this entertainment shit, let's double down on the enterprise divisions, they're always giving huge profits.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!
