SWTOR had a rumored 200 million dollar budget and currently sits at 85 on metacritic. In contrast, to oaefzDestiny had an estimated 500 million dollar budget and is currently sitting at 76/77 metacritic for PS4 and XB1 respectively.

No it didn't. For the love of God, will people stop spreading misinformation?

The developers clarified that that estimate was for the franchise, not the first game. We've no idea how much Destiny cost.

As for your question, any question that end with "of all time?" is a wrong in my book.

Actually, since the sequels of Destiny could have been in the game itself, it could have been for the game, before Activision split it into pieces.

Regardless of what could or could not have been in the game, the Destiny franchise has yet to actually incur 500 million in costs. People need to stop throwing that figure around because it makes it hard to view Destiny objectively. In that regard, yes, Destiny could be one of the most over-hyped games of all time...but it's not because it's a horrible game. The misinformations created hype levels and expectations for Destiny that were too unrealistic.

Not nearly as over-hyped as Metacritic.

In recent memory, yes, there simply isn't a game that matches its mediocrity in relation to the level of hype it received.

Most overhyped game of the year? Hell yes...
All time? Not so sure

Destiny did NOT have a 500 million dollar budget, that is for the franchise.

yes, it is.
it sold pretty much on the budget and bungie's name alone.
it's got good aspects, but the game just isn't good overall.

What was the name of the Xbox third person scifi shooter game with the weird proportions(long legs)? That and Oni were pretty hyped iirc, but I don't know the budgets.  Looked it up, it was Advent Rising.

Also OP this subject will be ridiculously difficult given the fact that we mostly don't know budgets of games.  We know the hyped ones, but no idea of how much was spent on development or marketing.  Unless there's a hidden cache of game budgets written down somewhere I don't know about.

not even close.

Wait for the game to be old and if in 3 years people still praise it then it can compete with some other games that are still hyped even tho they are completely mediocre.

Personally, I feel Destiny didn't quite deliver on all of its promises, but I still can't get enough and I've still got many more friends still playing Destiny than anything else. A lot of Destiny's perceived failure was simply due to time. They couldn't quite make the game they wanted within the amount of time they had. We've seen that from numerous leaks, etc. If you read the original Activison/Bungie contract the game was supposed to launch Fall 2013. It was almost a year late as is. They were certainly under a ton of pressure from Activision. With that said, just like Titanfall, the foundation has been laid for an epic franchise, with tons to build on.

And speaking of Titanfall, it sold 3 million copies. It was a huge success, enough to garner EA signing on to publish sequels. And like Destiny, if you read The Final Hours of Titanfall, that game was in absolute development hell for a few years, delayed a couple times, but ultimately delivered something special to build on. And like Destiny, I absolutely loved Titanfall and put in hundreds of hours, reached 10th regen, and really only stopped because of Destiny.

I think this entire "Over-Hyped" phenomenon is more a personal and individual feeling about a particular game. It didn't live up to "your" expectations or you didn't like it, therefore, it was "over-hyped."

Destiny didn't have a budget of 500 million. This has been said many times.
