This. Whats the point of making things when you can just buy them? Thus their continued lack of identity.

And what's Sony's identity? Destiny? They pushed that harder than any of their own games.

Also, MS has the more noteworthy IPs. Such as Minecraft!

MS previously purchased exclusive advertising for COD:Ghosts and Madden 15, both of which went on to sell better on the PS4, and it didn't help the One's sales boost above the PS4, either.

That isn't a realistic goal.

Buying exclusive advertising is cheaper than making games. Which is why both MS and Sony do it.

Both companies are making less games and I presume they'll keep buying exclusive advertising to help move hardware.

If the premise is, "if they're not winning, it's not worth it," then I think that's faulty. The goal with any business is growth--for that to happen, you have to keep moving forward. It's not like they're going to stop trying to sell consoles because they're in second place.

Granted, it was yet another scoop of bad luck for Microsoft that this appears to be a very down year for CoD. Obviously, we can't call it a trend yet, but it does merit attention.

I think Sony is playing the ad game much better than MS, at this point.  I mean, you're going to purchase exclusive advertising for a game that is HUGE in EU, which is pretty much Sony land?  And for a multiplat that is well known in that region to also be coming to the PS4.  At least Sony is doing it for new IPs that some of the less informed may think is a true exclusive, or for those who are informed, ties that franchise to the PS brand.

Lol, it's funny how you just proved his point with that last part.

And for your post above, it wasn't impossible until we got the results to prove it was impossible.  Before that, many thought those deals would help it.  Also, Sony making fewer games?  I'm guessing you have't looked at their line up for the next year or two.

I don't think it matters unless it's a huge system seller like GTA. If I see a UFC commercial and see a Xbox One game, I just figure it's on PS4.

Exclusive marketing doesn't do for MS what it does for Sony, so it may seem like a waste of money; however, if they just stopped, you can bet Sony would swoop in and secure the deals for themselves. That wouldn't end to well. This whole exclusive DLC on X console, and marketing stuff is a game MS started, a game that worked very well last gen. It just so happens that karma has finally come around to bite them in the rear.

Sony's identity is pretty clear, they're offering a powerful gaming focused machine at a reasonable price the runs the best version of most mulitplats, and has their staple exclusives and first party support.

MS is getting their identity together but it's still in rough shape, at the moment it just feels like their identity is "We're doing what Sony did a few months ago". They need to differentiate further. I still think taking Kinect wasn't the best idea, cutting the price to $399 with Kinect would have been much better.  People may hate it, but it's still something that would have set it apart. As is, the mainstream consumer just sees it as the console that isn't a PS4. MS can't rely on third party superiority anymore (multiplats are better on PS4) and their first party output is quite... well worrying. They've got SO (which won't be pushing any systems) and a remaster collection and then... QB sometime in 2015, along with Fable sometime in the summer.... Then another Forza and Halo to close the year and maybe Scalebound thrown in there somewhere (PD and CD are probably 2016 titles).

They shouldn't. I mean, it should be shown it's for all consoles. That's one of the reason why Wii U multiplats don't sell. They don't have exclusive marketing.

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

That isn't how the average consumer perceives PS4 and the part I bolded is not accurate. You have Sony confused with Nintendo.

No Sony game is a "staple." They don't have a Mario.

Yeah...Microsofts most notable IP's have been purchased. Sony's were mostly created internally with the vision of blending the cinematic realm with the traditional videogame realm.  If you've read up on their relationship with Naughty Dog the whole reason being it was to develop a style similar to pixar where stories and cinematics also were included in the action. Of course as time has gone by the style has infiltrated other games like InFamous, Resistance and other titles.  Sony has a style to how they produce games. They have an identity and they target mostly teenagers to adults. Nintendo knows their audience is children and families. ;)

It was intended to be a joke. MS and Sony simply don't have an identity like a Nintendo. They have some popular IPs but they are both heavily dependent on 3rd parties to move hardware.

I'm saying exclusive advertising won't miraculously put X1 sales over PS4. That's an unrealistic expectation.

Yeah, I've seen Sony's lineup for the next year or two.  Its not many games and they will do the marketing for numerous 3rd party games.
