don't forget it's shipped

With numbers being thrown here and there, I almost forgot this. So these $500 million doesn't mean anything until we get some retailer numbers, right?

These 500M mean they made a lot of money, shipped or sold through doesnt matter to them.

And on the other hand, that means the demand was very high, retailers would never accept such big shipments if they knew they wouldnt sell it, shipments is sent based on pre orders

bold1:
It won't happen to Destiny but in theory that isn't correct.

Retailers can send unsold copies back to the publisher and get a refund.

bold2:
not correct either. Resident Evil 6 was massively overshipped.

That's impressive.

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Me!

where is that destiny will bomb BS now?

They've got a 10 year contract, but didn't Activision say the advertising budget alone was going to be $500 million? They made their money back day one when it comes to the games development and advertising budget, but no one knows what they paid for the 10 year contract between Bungie. They'll probably get their money back by the second game though, if not the first.

Also, in the press release, Activision is stating how they've already made $500 million. I don't think you'd factor in first party and retail sellers cuts additionally, because to me it sounds as if that $500 million they've announced is already factored in.

Even the Internet isn't immune to the game of telephone :P

But no, they actually said the exact opposite in that everything for the next couple years came up to 500 mil. Making close to that in one day is pretty good when your bills are paid up for the next couple years.

Thanks jlmurph!

Damn... Since that covers development and advertising everything from this point is just profit.

I hope this just proves to some of the cowardly publishers out there that new IPs can be insanely profitable too.

Whoah. I didn't expect the game to hit 500m the first day. It's a good thing though!

they dont even have to send unsold copies back

they just dont oder (many) new copies

all that result in less sales and less renevue/profit

"That number has been widely misinterpreted as a production number for the first game," Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg explained in an interview today at Gamescom. "That number is an all-inclusive number that's several years worth of investment, including marketing and several games, and a lot of up front investment in things like engines and tools that will be able to be used for years to come."

for comparison:

CoD: Ghosts --> 1billion dollar first day (sell in)

GTAV --> 800m frist day (sell through)

Destiny --> 500m first day (sell in)

For a new IP this is AMAZING!

omg i have to fixx this

it was 24 hours not 48

Ghosts sell-through was apparently below 500 million - that is less than half of reported sell-in. So I guess some cautiousness might be in order with Destiny's numbers too.
