These 500M mean they made a lot of money, shipped or sold through doesnt matter to them.

And on the other hand, that means the demand was very high, retailers would never accept such big shipments if they knew they wouldnt sell it, shipments is sent based on pre orders

Retailers can send unsold copies back to the publisher and get a refund.
