Forums - Gaming Discussion - What Video Games Should Christians Play?

God it's liberating to be atheist .

I am a Christian. I plan on getting Bayonetta 2 and playing the hell out of it (no pun intended).

What games should Christians play? Whatever the fuck they want. God doesn't mind guys, really. Now kids, on the other hand, should probably not play certain games. Not just Christian kids, but all kids.

Whether you are a christian or not should not affect what games you choose to play, can't believe some christians allow their belief to have this much affect on their life.

So I should just play GTA? killing, running over people, stealing, sex, drugs, etc? What kind of message am I sending to my kids if I do this? Why am I doing this?

You're telling  your kids you're having fun doing what you'd never do in real life.  Playing a video game isn't the same as commiting the act.

There's no difference in murdering hundreds of Goombas or dropping Bowder in a pit of lava.  It's animated violence.

They should play all games. Religious beliefs should not influence how a gamer plays. Instead, games should dictate a gamers' religious beliefs. Games are more important.

Games are not more important than really anything.

Comment was not meant to be taken seriously. But thank you for replying.

I was raised in a Christian family and I call myself Christian.

I've never understood this "my faith prevents me from playing this game" thing. I mean violence and sex? I hate to have to burst your bubble, but God made boobs, too. You're not living in faith; you're living in denial of what the world is like. It makes no sense.

Avoiding it because you just don't like it or because a child is too young makes perfect sense, but for most fundies your standard T rated stuff will do fine.

There is a massive difference between those who call themselves Christians based on who or what they were raised around and those who personally, specifically, and intentionally have accepted Christ as their LORD and Savior. If someone has accepted Christ, then they love the word of God (The Holy Bible) and they desire to follow HIS way. If a man is married to a woman then absolutely he can enjoy her body (and vice versa). That is the ONLY appropriate and non sinful context for sexual activity. God created sex, sexual drives for intimacy, and created us in a way that we are attracted to those of the opposite gender so sex is MEANT to be enjoyed by all who are married to one another.

I have a wife (got married in July this year). The ONLY boobs I want to and am called to 'enjoy' are hers and hers alone. The same for the rest of her body. If a video game has nudity it is no different than watching porn (soft or hardcore) which is no different than comitting adultry.

And by the way, the New Testament is FULL of verses talking about how different believers are from the world. We were never, nor are, nor will EVER be called by Christ to conform to this sinful and wicked world. Living in faith IS denying the way of the world and it IS ONLY following the path of Christ.

Yes, but when you start sanitizing every last bit of violence and sexual content from your media, this crosses the line from trying to be personally different from everyone else to whitewashing the way the universe is.

I mean, two examples of even barely edgy content. Dark Souls is really dark, violent, more than a bit nihilistic, and if you take all your character's clothes, all he or she is wearing is a basic loin cloth (and a chest wrap for the ladies). I hesitate to call this sexual content as the player character spends more than half the game as a mummified corpse and most of the nudity in the game is intended to disturb rather than arouse. And yet, at the end of the day, Dark Souls offers players a temptation--you can murder NPCs or invade other player's worlds to acquire souls and humanity. And the major reason that's tempting for most players to begin with is that Dark Souls is a hard game.

So on the one hand you have a nihilistic universe challenging the Christian worldview because no character--not even your own--gets a good ending, and on the other being able to deal with temptation parallels the Christian worldview nicely. One challenges your views, the other reaffirms them, and if your faith is genuine both will strengthen it.

But if you are a stickler for clean content it doesn't qualify because Quelaag is gorgeous if you ignore something VERY OBVIOUS about her character design. Quelaag is actually a toned down version of Sin from Milton's Paradise Lost.

I could say the same thing about Ghost Trick. Ghosts really don't have much of a place in the Christian Worldview, but Ghost Trick tells an incredible story about the value of human life with them. I'm not going to burn that bridge just to be a purist.

All this is just to say I'm not zealous about drawing lines on what a Christian should or shouldn't play. If your faith is genuine anything will (in the long run) strengthen it, whether it is a challenge, temptation, or an alternative. Faith is not a valid reason to avoid something. Saying your faith precludes you from doing something also implies anyone else who doesn't agree and can't share the same faith.

Saying your personal taste means you don't like it is perfectly valid, however.

I've never played Dark Souls and I don't really know anything about it so I can't really offer a valid thought on that game, sorry. I will say, in response to the comment toward the end, that Christ HIMSELF says HE is the one path to salvation and God. There are not many paths. Our calling is to follow Christ. Any actions we do that do not reflect us following God through our ultimate example, Christ Jesus, are sins. To sin is to do something contradictory to God, ultimately.

1. Just because I'm saved by Christ doesn't mean I am perfect. I still have many sinful moments in my life. My past/present/future moments of idolizing things are sins, but God will not punish me I am saved by HIS Son The Christ.

2. I can not explain to you the hope one has when they have Christ. I myself have that hope and nothing on Earth can overwhelm me when I concentrate on that. Christianity may appear to be "putting people down" and "offering a cure that's not even needed" but that is simply man being tempted away from God (either by his own fleshly sin or influenced by the devil and his demons).

God created man. Man sinned.

Time and time again in the Bible and in modern days man sins against God, yet God withholds his anger from destroying humanity. Time and time again HE forgives those who sin against HIM. That's what the Bible shows us. God provided ways for people to atone for their sins in the Old Testament and HE provided the ultimate way for people to be forgiven in Christ Jesus the savior. Literally all someone has to do is accept God's son as their savior and they will be forgiven of their sins (both past and future). And once you have Christ, you will truly be free (as I and all other believers know).

At best this is a concept. It's completely unprovable. We do bad things because humans can be dicks. We don't need salvation though...we just need to work together more closely to make things better. In the end, our actions were what led us into the 21st century. We need less prayer, more actions. You can see all the good prayer has done for the Israel/Palestine situation (hint: prayer is doing nothing). Or for any other conflict.

If you're forced to stop feeling a certain way, i struggle to call that freedom.

1. We, as humans, have accomplished nothing good throughout our history when we depend on our own "englightened" mindsets and avoid the mind of God. The Roman empire that was meant to bring order? Talk about a LOT of wars a LOT of oppression and a WHOLE LOT of corruption. The Middle Ages that was supposed to make Europe civilized? Assassinations, political and religious corruption everywhere, and slavery all over the place. The Renaissance? Do I even need to comment on all the revolutions that took place around the world that killed so many people so violently? World war 1, 2, the Cold war, and now this nonstop Capitalistic west vs. crazy radical islamic mindset? Whenever we humans take initiative to change the world for the "better" we do horrible things while attempting to justify it with small gains. We never have, nor are now, nor ever will be able to "make things better" by ourselves. We need God. HE created us. HE has the best plan for us. And time and time again when humans trust God through Christ Jesus their lives change forever in a incomprehensibly wonderful way. Our actions have lead to thousands of years of war, murder, and the overall degredation of life and morals. Prayer is what we need and thankfully we have someone speaking to God on our behalf for those of us who have accepted HIM as our savior (Jesus Christ).

2. Regarding the Israel/Palestine situation. If you have read the Bible then you know Israel has been, is, and will continue to be persecuted by the world throughout it's history as a nation. If the world is anti God due to Satan's grasp on it, then of course the world will find a way to be anti God's chosen people. I suspect the only thing the devil hates almost as much as god are Israel and Christians.

They (we) can enjoy whatever their conscience and the Holy Spirit lets them. If it interferes with their heart for God and others, then there's a problem. Otherwise, freedom of Christ.

Is the Holy Spirit going to physically bar you from playing games or something? At best your conscience will. It's not like God made rules about playing specific video games.

These are the same things Soriku.

I do agree on GTA being a crime simulator, and pretty much pure filth.
GTA is disturbing not because of the violence, but because it shows a lot of people think criminal life is cool and fun.
I think it is related to how in the United States because of rappers middle class people think gangsters and pimps are cool.
I don't have a problem with violence in videogames, but war games generally have you killing the nazis, not playing as the nazis.

As a Christian I play many games from the Legend of Zelda to Grand Theft Auto, honestly it really boils down to your convictions and is between the person and The Lord. There are some games that I will not play due to my own personal convictions I have shaped through my faith, but a Christian needs to make that decision on their own.

A Christian should play whatever game he or she wants. As long as it's not a game where you are flogging and crucifying Jesus or something like that, it's fine. You can shoot someone in the head playing Call of Duty as long as you don't do it in real life.
