The point is if you count the Wii the 7 gen consoles will always end up higher combined than the 8 gen. The problem with that is that it would make you think that the market is shrinking, while in fact the core gaming market could be growing. It's just the casuals that have moved on.

I think this is a good way to put it

The market looks like it has shrunk, but it affects Nintendo disproportionately more than Sony and Microsoft. The number of potential buyers of Sony and Microsoft consoles may have decreased a little but no where near as much.

Well, if you two see it that way, last gen was already shrinking, as PS3+X360

10 years greatest game event!

The X1 is only tracking like the PS3 because of a frontoaded launch. I don't see it going beyond 8 million at most this year and even then it may be pushing it (since it's sales will come pretty much only from NA anf UK).

As for the PS4, I can't see it going beyond 17 maybe 18 million. I don't think Sony will even be able to make more than that

Not a good assuption as the wii was half the price as the 360 and amost a third of the ps3, People bought it early as to why the sales where so high, so everybody that wanted it got it early so no reason as to why it would sell continuosly. By the time the wii stoped selling it was almost 30-40m I think ahead of the competition. Casuals did left the wii, but gamers kept buying games and it reflected on sales, while dance games and other casual crap stoped selling, hardcore games like zelda, metroin and others kept selling well.

This is some revisionist history.  In 2011 what Wii games sold more than Zelda?

Just Dance 3
Mario Kart
Wii Sports Resort
Wii Sports
Just Dance 2
Zumba Fitness
NSMB
Wii Fit Plus

If you keep going down the list past Zelda you'll find such hardcore games as

Wii Party
Mario and Sonic 2012 Olympics
Michael Jackson: The Experience
DKCR
Mario Sports Mix
Just Dance
Just Dance Kids
Skylander's
Kirby
Epic Mickey
uDraw Studio

Those are all the Wii games that landed in the top 100 SW of 2011.  You'll find the list in 2012 isn't hugely different.  A new Just Dance, a new Skylanders, Mario Party, Zumba Fitness 2 makes it in despite being released the year previously.  No sign of Zelda or Metroid in 2012.

Personally if you want to compare generations i would ignore the Wii since that number is heavily inflated by the casuals going for the motion control hype. It really doesn't tell you anything about the actual console gaming market.

Comparing PS3/360 to PS4/XOne this gen is doing well so far.

Actually, 7th gen grew as expected from 6th gen, about 30-35%, which compares well to previous transitions. Yes, alot of people that don't play games jumped in the bandwagon, but that was true with the PS2 as well as the NES, so that is kind of a mute argument. Industries live on growth, so this generation will suffer greatly if it doesn't grow from 7th Gen.

No it didn't, PS2 was at about 130m after eight years. GC doesn't count or if it does, you should count 20m for Wii.

So basically you get ps2+Xbox+DC= 160m. PS3+360 are already over 165m and still going. And that's with an shrinking Japanese market and one console less.
