...twice the RAM speed ? Or twice the capacity ?
Those rumored numbers aren´t out of the realm of possibility, they are pretty much in line with what the GBC and DSi had over the original hardware.

These 2 websites claim to know the specs of the new 3DS through dev kits. Rumours are: triple the clock speed, double the FCRAM, same GPU and same VRAM (although many other scources also claim an extra 4 MB of VRAM) Compared to the older models this would mean: CPU would go from a dual ARM11 MPCore clocked at 268 Mhz and a single core ARM9 clocked at 134 Mhz ---> dual core processor clocked at 804 Mhz and a single core processor at 402 Mhz (L2 cache would be added as well) GPU would stay the Pica200 at 268 Mhz (no real surprise, the Pica200 is plenty of powerful enough for the 3DS) RAM: 128MB of FCRAM (fast cycle random acces memory) and 6MB of VRAM (video random acces memory) ---> 256MB of FCRAM and 6/10MB of VRAM (different rumours point to 6 or 10 MB's of VRAM) Do note that these numbers are all speculation and that they are in no way a definitive measurement of performance. |
Two things show otherwise.
1) there are no SDK updates that reflect such a large boost in speed, generally all devkits run slightly faster than retail to handle debugging overhead.
2) The fastest MPCore Arm 11 processor is the TSMC 65LP which is clocked at 427mhz - the processor is dual core.
If these sites are going to talk bull, they could at the very least google their "rumored" specs to make sure they're within feasible reality.
And besides all that, their source is a youtuber who is known to massively exaggerate, and for being an extreme fanboy (how many normal people do you know who buy FIVE of the same console, just for their own use).

You saw the first trailer of a game and you assume it's going to look like that when it is released? And even if it is, to assume the new 3ds is worse than the wii based on that may be a bad assumption considering xenoblade wii was made towards the end of the wii and, therefore, developers knew how to push it the farthest. The "new" 3ds is just beginning and will probably be at least a couple/few years before they really push it.
i can confirm there are currently no sdk updates for a new version 3ds, so the likelihood of nintendo shipping a new tool unit with no software support is virtually none.

The link you provided actually states it goes up to 1ghz?...
They should have waited another year, improved the specs even more, used a different name, and made it the 3DS successor instead of a temporary stop-gap before their next handheld.
The splintering of the 3DS userbase just makes no sense to me, not when they're planning on releasing New 3DS-only software. How are they going to avoid total customer confusion at retail?
"Does this play on 3DS?"
"No, only on the NEW 3DS."
"So, it's not the same system?"
"No, it is, but it's just got more features and better specs."
Totally avoidable...

switch to processor comparison tab scroll down to the actual processor chart, the one youre looking for the MPcore.
up to 1ghz is for the 76JZ family cpu which couldn't be used in a 3ds.

The PICA200 at 400 mhz is more powerful than the Wii's GPU, they could have achieved some very nice graphics with that kind of power, but instead they're keeping the clock at 268mhz? Doesn't seem like the new model will receive much of a graphics boost at all, even if the old CPU clock speeds were bottlenecking the GPU some. |
I think they're just doing this to boost 3DS sales and keep sales at a certain level until the successor is ready, so I don't think specs are a concern. We also have to keep in mind that Nintendo will want to use parts in the next handheld that will make porting and developing between console and handheld very easy and cost-efficient, so I don't know if the PICA would be the best choice for that if we're talking 2016-2020.

Like it has been said, the New 3DS' memory and CPU are better, but the GPU is the same! Hence why the port of Xenoblade looks and runs much worse on the New 3DS!

Yep! Especially for Nintendo games. I can't remember the last time the initial trailer for a Nintendo game looked noticably different from the final product.
And you're right, this comparison is not conclusive of anything but but its the only tangible evidence we have. the evidence suggests it is not more powerful then the wii, hence why EVERYTHING in the trailer looks worse.
at bolded, isn't it the same achitecture as the 3DS?
