Forums - Sony - VR Is Such A Major Step Forward for Games It's Almost Unfair, Sony Says

You know on Sept. 9th we are doing an Xbox One lan party; everybody bringing their console at my place with TVs etc. (before some smart asses says you cannot play Destiny on local network); and you know what we are going to have some drinks, food, look at each others TV, etc... Have fun together in short.

Must be really fun to do that with VR google/whatever device on the head...

Wow, way to completely disregard some awesome technology. This is something for single player games. Imagine playing a game like Skyrim with this on, it would look amazing!

Not all of us host massive LAN parties, you know.

Disregard? Nope, I'm actually looking forward for this in SP game, MAJOR STEP forward? Nope...

Of course you downplay it and say it's not a major step forward. MS didn't announce such a headset afterall. Illumiroom on the other hand... That must be a major step forward, right?

And, by the way, VR sets could work wonders in online multi player FPS games.

I don't see it as a major step forward either, guess its because sony announced it and certainly not because of my own thoughts.

I can see it working for driving games quite well but if you're seriously into driving games you probably have a Wheel setup that would be difficult to use with a headset on. For other games being close to a big screen can already take up most of my vision. I just don't see this being anything more than a niche product.

Racing and any other simulation games will be awesome in VR. FPS and RPGs need some rethinking in parts but will be extremely immersive.

I'm only a bit afraid it's still too early. 60fps is kinda low for VR where any lag or inaccuracy in head movement updates will cause motion sickness. And spreading the view out to 90 degrees horizontal at 1080p is like going back to 360p gaming.

It will be a major step in the future. Morpheus will be a small first step.

The CV1 from Oculus will have 90 HZ and 1440p OLED (100 degress horizontal FOV). Which should be acceptable for the consumer for now.  I am not sure how Sony is going to do it with Morpheus but I cant imagine that they will bring it to the market in its current form.

The games will look a lot more basic if they have to run at 1440p 90fps stereo. Although I guess the way Oculus works is it will be 1280x1440 for each eye, which is still only the equivalent of 384x480 per eye or less compared to the usual 30 degree fov or less of tv sitting distances.

It will be great, but you won't be playing with Infamous SS or Drive club like visuals on Morpheus. Oculus Rift has May 2015 for release date, Morpheus unknown.

Well the graphics can look basic as the resolution with 1440p is still pretty low, so no need for too much detail anyway. I am well aware of the limitations of the tech but its already at a level that feels gamechanging despite the low resolution. 4k and then 8k are the next steps on the VR Roadmap we have PS2 level VR now it will take a decade to arrive at PS4 level.

PS3 level VR should be possible. GT6 already ran at 1440x1080 at near 60fps on PS3. That level of graphics would be fine with me in VR. Wipeout HD in VR, yes please.

I wonder about Oculus though. Will it force lower settings to make the experience smooth, or simply not run if your pc can't handle it? On console that has already been taken care of for you. On PC I regularly get slowdown in odd places, that would be killer in VR.

Well, that sure can't be practical, lugging a console and a TVset around to a friend's house. If it's an XOne, can't you just use online and Skype at the same time, just like in the adds?

This said, VR excites me about as much as carrying half of my entertainment center across town.

Remember when 3D was the future of movies?

I have played around with the google Cardboard thingy on a 1440p phone and the pixels are pretty small.  The FOV is quite restricted though, around 90 degrees FOV it's like looking through goggles but the resolution is much better.  The effect of turning your head to look around is still as convincing.  I read the Oculus has 110 degree FOV.

Yeah, in such a situation using VR headsets would just kill the atmosphere.

So this product will obviously be a complete fail. Unless, of course, SONY invents, say, 364 other days that are not Sept. 9th and are thus single-player-compatible...

Hmmm I feel the exact opposite, so far it still feels like a gimmick. I won't even care about VR until we have SAO level of VR which may or may not happen in our lifetimes.

if only there was a way to play a PS4 without VR.

we are all fucked.
