As I told Starcraft, the deal has a duration so unless you believe it lasts 2+ years there will be a PS4 version (and PC). Heck, they've most likely already started on those versions

We do not know what the deal is.  The deal could be for any mainline TR game released in the next 2 years to be exclusive forever, his statements are still accurate.

"He also confirmed Square Enix are free to do anything the want with the game and the franchise after the deal has ended, including releasing on other consoles"

Dammit, Phil Spencer makes it hard to dislike XBOX

Perhaps, but Greenberg makes it easy. Seems like good cop bad cop tactics to me. If the last "official" word from MS is all soft and soothing tones it may be hoped that people will forget the PR crap that went on, including from CD, over the previous day or so.

Greenberg specifically tweeted a response to appear to contradict what Keighly was suggesting, that RTR is only a 2015 exclusive. Making it seem like it's a permanent exclusive. And while Spencer is right that his job is not to talk about whether or not the game will come to other platforms it is MS's duty not to mislead.

MS is directly responsible for the misleading crap that went on in the last 24 hours when in the original announcement they could simply have said, without specifics, that MS and SE/CD have an exclusivity arrangement which means the only place you'll be able to play RTR in 2015 is on Xbox. The the path for Tomb Raider from 2016 onwards is entirely in SE/CD'S hands, we are just here to say RTR in 2015 is only on Xbox.

Seriously, has MS made any actual mileage out of 24 hours of uncertainty as to the extent of the exclusivity? Only the anti-Xbox brigade are passed off in any way. But are console agnostics who are yet to decide what to buy this generation going to be more or less likely to go with Xbox now after MS and SE/CD chose to treat gamers like drooling idiots who can't spot bullshit when it's served up to them?

Anyway I feel vindicated in my assertion that moneyhatting existing IP for full permanent exclusivity is not a viable proposition. And aside from a few isolated examples it never really has been.

The obfuscation is too strong for RTR to be a permaexclusive. If it was a permaexclusive then Spencer would have said it outright. Because from a MS perspective a permaexclusive is hugely good news, and even more if it's for all mainline sequels and not something you would want to obfuscate around. Phil's response is entirely consistent with a "yes the game will likely come to PS4 and PC but hell if I'm going to come out and actually say that to anyone" response.

Phil's ok, and he's probably got as close to confirming future releases on competing platforms as he's allowed to do as a MS PR schill. So I'm not going to criticise what he's said here. It's what's been said in the preceding 24 has that merits a lot of criticism.

Sounds good to me, at least the whiners can now get the game 6-12 months later...

For those who would have actually been interested in the game, they will get it when its available on XB1 if it really mattered to them. If they don't, they can get it later on whatever platform.

Problem solved...

Lol, really now. They're going to buy an expensive console just because they're interested in this game, which they can get elsewhere if they wait a few short months

I said that exact same thing in my post, what is your point?

The point is that it's a strange claim to say that those who "actually would have been interested in the game" will get it on XB1, because that's not true at all. Not all tomb raider fans would've bought an X1 for it...especially now that they know it's timed.

""When people want me to say, can you tell us when or if it's coming to other platforms, it's not my job," Spencer told Eurogamer. "My job is not to talk about games I don't own. I have a certain relationship on this version of Tomb Raider, which we announced, and I feel really good about our long term relationship with Crystal and Square.

"I get the reaction I see. If I'm a PlayStation person all of a sudden I feel like, the franchise has gone. I didn't buy the IP. I didn't buy the studio. It's not mine. Where this thing will go over time, just like Dead Rising or Ryse, we'll see what happens with the game. I don't own every iteration of Tomb Raider.

"I don't own them building Tomb Raider on other platforms. I can't talk about the franchise that way. I can talk about the deal I have.""

So, what, exactly, is that deal?

"I have Tomb Raider shipping next holiday exclusively on Xbox. It is Xbox 360 and Xbox One. I'm not trying to fake anybody out in terms of where this thing is. What they do with the franchise in the long run is not mine. I don't control it. So all I can talk about is the deal I have. I don't know where else Tomb Raider goes."

Is there a time limit on the exclusivity period?

"Yes, the deal has a duration. I didn't buy it. I don't own the franchise."

Can you tell us how long the duration is?

"No. It's not because I'm trying to be a headfake on anybody. It's a deal between us and the partner. People ask me how much did we pay. There are certain things I'm just not going to talk about because it's a business deal between us and them. Obviously the deal does have a duration. I didn't buy the IP in perpetuity."

Very wormy guy, he in no way implies RotTR will be on anything but Xbox, when he talks of other platforms he refers to the franchise or the IP.

Interesting enough, I also noticed the same thing in his statement.  Phil never states that this Tomb Raidar will ever see the light of day on any other console besides MS.  There is nothing wormy about what he says. Phil clearly states he has no control of the IP or the franchase and what CD or SE will do with it.  He only have control on the deal for this game which is very clear from his words.

The crazy part is that this Tomb Raider might not come to PC or PS4 which would be kind of funny in a lot of ways based on some huge threads here and other places.

As I told Starcraft, the deal has a duration so unless you believe it lasts 2+ years there will be a PS4 version (and PC). Heck, they've most likely already started on those versions

As you told Starcraft, based on your own personal and intimate knowledge of the deal

Kyliedog is correct. Phil very carefully specifies that he is discussing the IP only. The 'deal' could very well be the duration before any Tomb Raider IP of substance can appear on other platforms - meaning its entirely feasible that this Tomb Raider game will skip the PS4 and PC altogether.

Which is great and all, except Phil didn't actually say that did he? The writer said that, making the same inaccurate extrapolation you are.

KylieDog is correct. Neither of us are saying that this excludes the game from ever coming to PS4. But you're looking for a confirmation that simply is not there.

As of this moment, no member of the public has any reliable information that they'll ever play Rise of the Tomb Raider on a PS4.

Oh, okay. Then why are we hailing Phil Spencer for being all upfront and stuff when he's just spouting PR BS? I still am pretty certain it's only timed though.
