Forums - Gaming - Spreading exclusives out over time is actually smart business from Sony.

Yep patience is key, that's what we Wii U owners have been trying to say for months! But no one understands us...

They're selling more than X1 right now so it was right delaying all their exclusives years after launch.

And this is where the X1 failed. They constantly released so many of their great exclusives that their sales plummitted.

Good that Sony is yet again copying Nintedo for success.

Oh trust me it's DEFINITELY on purpose. They will not repeat their mistakes from last gen. This should be CLEAR by now. Sony learned from mistakes last gen and haven't made a single one of them yet this gen. And the results are staggering to say the least. Possible PS2 domination underway.

Furthermore, don't be naive. You have to understand business. All these games getting "delayed" are not really delayed. They were announced and given favorable release windows to bring more gamers on board to next gen. The health of the industry depends on gamers buying a new console on good faith that great games are coming to it. Trust me, Batman was never releasing this year. Neither was the Witcher, The Division, or MGS5. It's all part of the plan.

I'm not naive.

They are shoveling out exclusives and games as fast as they can because the development time IS getting very long (and unfortunately, quality has been subpar on everything but their port of TLOUR). There is a massive hunger for games, as can be seen by what hype and marketting can do for a pile of uninspired crap like W_D, but they cannot meet demand. They would LOVE to be able to meet it, they just can't. That's why they put forth all these indie games at things like gamescon. They simply have nothing else to show or present. (And, while those indies LOOK nice... most of them, when looked at with some skepticism, may be nothing more than fancy window dressing.)

M$ seems to have realized this and started applying the $ of their name to acquire as many games as possible from the third-party farms.

Huh? They are not "shoveling" out exclusives as fast as they can. Quite the opposite actually. That's the point. Killzone, Knack, and Infamous were indeed rushed to make the launch window because SOMETHING was needed at launch but they still were good games. Just not great (though I consider a infamous SS a great game). The ENTIRE industry was rushed because the competition to launch first expedited a ton of game development. Coming out so fast actually surprised a lot in the industry and Sony's brilliant strategy to hide the amount of RAM in PS4 caught everyone off guard as well. Guerrilla, SCE Japan, and Sucker Punch basically "took 1 for the team" by not taking the time to maximize all that power and meet the launch date. But that's not going to happen again. It clearly was a good business strategy to be launch titles because Shadowfall sold like hot cakes. Infamous outsold Titanfall on next gen and Knack crossed a million sold with poor reviews. Moving forward you can beat believe to expect slower release dates and higher quality games.

Indeed, and it's fun to have new surprises for each event.

I cant wait for TGS and then VGX !

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

The big difference here is Sony is selling a system like hot cakes on the superiority of it's technical aspects (most powerful, highest quality system on the market with a great competitive price) and on the justified faith they've earned from gamers by releasing incredible exclusives throughout entire generations literally right up until (and after) a new console launches. IE The best game of last gen (The Last of Us) released only 5 months before PS4.

Sony has a track record (plus not making the mistakes of 7th gen) to ride on until exclusives arrive. And boy oh boy when they start arriving the industry better look out. Those sales numbers are going to explode lol

Sony has been releasing less AAA games and thats a good thing?

Edit: Jokes aside, this is poor reasoning.

As others have already noted, development times and expense are simply very long, and Sony haven't managed that particularly well up until this point.

Additionally, the console has been selling brilliantly without much of a library behind it. This has no doubt created a massive disincentive for additional investment in games for Sony. Which, of course, is the value of competition from Nintendo and Microsoft.

^^^This statement is false lol

Development time is actually faster now. Mark Cerny talked extensively about the "time to triangle" approach they took when making PS4. He wanted to make sure he expedited the time it took for developers to get a game running exponetially. And succeeded. Gaming is easier to develop for now than it's ever been.

You sir are uninformed. Secondly, YEA! It's a good thing. Have you not read the thread to see the sound reasoning for that! lol

I know, I have read what Cerny said, and seen him at conferences. But thus far, particularly with delays (that are not limited to the PS4), he has been proven incorrect. Will that change? Mabye.

The only way it would be a good thing would be if Sony had such an overwhelming flow of AAA exclusives that we literally couldn't play them. That is not the case - in fact its stated Sony policy for that not to be the case. They've just fallen behind schedule sadly. And in the future, there is a real risk their runaway success will lead to underinvestment.

Still appears you haven't read the thread. These "delays" are not delays. The industry was not ready for next gen to release so soon. Next gen games were announced and given favorable release windows so more gamers would make the leap to next gen. A game like Batman was never releasing in 2014 and Rocksteady and Sony and MS knew that.

EDIT: ummm, that's exactly what the case was last gen lol so many exclusives released so close together and a lot got overlooked. Again, have you read the thread.

What mistakes? Did you really just ask that? lol okay, for anyone living under a rock the last 10 years let's recap. Arriving late to the party arrogantly (PS4 released before Xbox), having a monstrous price tag without the proof to justify it at launch (released cheaper than Xbox and still tons more powerful), no Dualshock at launch (DS4 in launch box), hard to develop for (if developers are to be believe PS4 is the easiest console to develop for EVER), pumping out exclusive after exclusive without a clever and business Davy marketing strategy this losing sales of quality games and closing down tons of studios (see OP), should I go on?

This thread is about spreading out exclusives and you were talking about mistakes. Why would you suddenly bring in all their other mistakes that have nothing to do with this conversation?

Because it has everything to do with this conversation lol not spreading exclusive out over time was just ONE of the mistakes Sony made last gen. This made it impossible to market in a ADD society. 5 AAA exclusives a year is optimal. They all will sell megatons and they all will be of the highest quality. Win-win strategy for all.

Also, under investment? Really? If this was Microsoft you'd have a point. Why? Because unlike Sony Microsoft has no first party studios. The fact that Sony owns 15 studios (who all have a ps4 priority) guarantees PS4 gamers games. Why? Because for these studios to keep their lights on and doors open THEY HAVE TO PRODUCE CONTENT!!! That content being PS4 exclusives.

Furthermore, there isn't a moment in history you can point too to say Sony would stop making games for a console. Not PS1 PS2 PS3. Unlike MS who abandoned 360 for Kinect.
