The big difference here is Sony is selling a system like hot cakes on the superiority of it's technical aspects (most powerful, highest quality system on the market with a great competitive price) and on the justified faith they've earned from gamers by releasing incredible exclusives throughout entire generations literally right up until (and after) a new console launches. IE The best game of last gen (The Last of Us) released only 5 months before PS4.
Sony has a track record (plus not making the mistakes of 7th gen) to ride on until exclusives arrive. And boy oh boy when they start arriving the industry better look out. Those sales numbers are going to explode lol
