Forums - Gaming - Spreading exclusives out over time is actually smart business from Sony.

I find that the problem with Sony owners always wanting exclusives is because Sony lacks that dominant multiplayer game (outside of last of us) that really resonates and is played religiously. MS can have two exclusives come out in a year and the truer fans wouldn't complain because those two games have utility for the whole year and beyond until the next installment. Because Sony makes single player games so well and so often, the action/adventure, RPG, artsy, indie and story based game loving fans gobble up the games jumping from game to game in a rabid fashion until everything is gone. During the last gen the Xbox had popular games but it was a handful of popular exclusives. With Sony every spread like termites which is why the sales were so sporadic. Hopefully Sony finds a remedy for this in the new gen. I think its smart that they are holding back on exclusives not just for monetary reasons but also for reasons of marketing and hype. The Order has gained quite the bit of hype over the past two years and Sony still isnt finished teasing. The new teaser looks amazing. It took two years to get me hyped for that game and pushing it back is only going to make it sweeter.

I know, I have read what Cerny said, and seen him at conferences. But thus far, particularly with delays (that are not limited to the PS4), he has been proven incorrect. Will that change? Mabye.

The only way it would be a good thing would be if Sony had such an overwhelming flow of AAA exclusives that we literally couldn't play them. That is not the case - in fact its stated Sony policy for that not to be the case. They've just fallen behind schedule sadly. And in the future, there is a real risk their runaway success will lead to underinvestment.

Also, under investment? Really? If this was Microsoft you'd have a point. Why? Because unlike Sony Microsoft has no first party studios. The fact that Sony owns 15 studios (who all have a ps4 priority) guarantees PS4 gamers games. Why? Because for these studios to keep their lights on and doors open THEY HAVE TO PRODUCE CONTENT!!! That content being PS4 exclusives.

Furthermore, there isn't a moment in history you can point too to say Sony would stop making games for a console. Not PS1 PS2 PS3. Unlike MS who abandoned 360 for Kinect.

When is a delay not a delay? They have scheduled games, then pushed them back. Sometimes they, like all first parties, have adjusted their schedules to suit other games. Mostly it is circumstances like The Order and Driveclub - the games simple weren't ready due to longer than anticipated development times. Don't stress about it too much, the development times will shorten as the generation moves on.

This argument about Microsoft's investment in games got tired about half way through the last generation. Microsoft currently has seventeen first party studios and thats in addition to their second party publishing deals. Further, some of those studios are two-team studios. They also have seperate studios to manage their back end systems (though these work across departments, not just for Xbox). Microsoft's most recent exclusive for Xbox 360 launched 3 months ago - 9 years after the release of that console.

Now, I understand why you railed against Microsoft to try to support your original argument, really I do. But unfortunately, whether you blame it on Sony's development management abilities and degree of investment, or the simple realities of modern game development, we're just going to see major Sony exclusives a little less often than we did on PS3 - as Sony themselves have said.

The PS4 is WAY more easy to develop for than the PS3, that's what almost every dev that got their hands on the system said about it.

Game making is still not that much more expensive than it was last gen, the graphical quality still have a lot to improve and the systems are almost PC's so the development is a lot easier, and the flood of the indie market to the plataform just prove it.

Of course games with a graphical quality like Uncharted 4 seems to have are expensive and hard to do, so that can take time, but last gen was no different, nor was the gen before it, and the before it , and the before it...

What does that have to do with anything? That it is easier to develop for than the PS3? That has nothing to do with the massive timesinks that are current development cycles simply because of all of the work that has to go into graphics and everything needed to make the games shiny and "HD". (Also the systems are not "almost PCs" they ARE PCs. The fact that they are flooded with garbage indie games doesn't tell us much... other than that they are filled with garbage indie games.) And right now there are damned arms races, that Sony themselves started, over graphical fidelity which are utterly devastating the development times lest some game come out with 900p and be laughed out of the room. Developers don't have the liberty of making things look good if the user can manage it with the proper rig, they have to squeeze out of every inch of performance in their games for glorified PCs in ugly black boxes. All of this adds more and more time to development.

PPC/ARM game development is actually easier than x86, porting is harder. Code can be optimized much more for gaming with PPC/ARM, than it can with x86.

Lol ...it was a rhetorical statement. Anyone with a pulse knows Sony 1st Party vs MS First Party is a landslide victory for Sony

I was surprised he didnt do this before he told me MS had no first party studios

Last gen they had little choice.

Now they can afford to delay and wait till the games are ready to be released and be given proper marketing.

That and I beleive they are holding back by choice. Saving it all for a massive 2015 while Ps4 being ps4 is more then enough to sale cray cray amounts now.

Yeah spacing out the releases makes sense, but they could at least announce some stuff.

My only problem with announcing stuff is I'd rather not know a game is coming in 2016 or Holiday 2015 at this point because it's not going to matter in the long run. They're just going to have to reintroduce it again at E3 or something.
