Forums - Nintendo - How powerful will Nintendo's next-gen handheld/console be?

Stronger than PS4bone, weaker than PS5 and Xbox[?] but closer in power to PS5 and Xbox[?] than Wii U is to PS4bone.

MS will go overboard in console power next gen because they will not want to let PS5 have the specs bragging rights again. And it's obvious that unless MS has the best multiplats the market pretty much shrugs its shoulders at Xbox. So I expect Xbox[?]>PS5>Nextendo.

They will go with the same routine they have been following since Gamecube.
It will be more powerful than the 8th Gen but weaker than the 9th Gen. Similar to how Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U were: "stronger than previous gen and weaker than next gen".
As for handheld, it will be more powerful than the Vita, but worse than the next Ps handheld.
Guess that's my prediction due to what they have been doing for 14 years now. Unless something surprising happens ^^ .

The fact that Nintendo is sticking with the tablet controller makes things pretty clear: they are prepping up to go all mobile.

I'm expecting one device next gen and it will be a mobile one, with the ability to connect to the tv. And since an Nvidia Tegra K1 chip is already on par with Wii-U now, the system will end between Wii-U and XBone pwerwise.

I want the next Nintendo console to be much more powerful than the PS4, but I know that won't be the case..

Im not trying to bash anyone, Im genuinely curious, but for the people who say Nintendo's next console needs to be more powerful than PS4 or on par with PS5/Xbox4, why do you think this and how does it benefit Nintendo?

If they make a console thats more powerful than PS4 but not at next-gen levels then that puts it right where Wii U currently is, a console late to the party trying to win over an audience thats happy on there current platforms. If they go with making a PS5/Xbox4 level console then that means they are going to release a $400+ console in hopes of winning an audience that has rejected them for over 20 years. In either case I dont see it ending well for Nintendo.

In my view, Nintendo is never going to get the AAA western mulitplat crowd on there consoles, either developers wont release them from the get go or if they do consumers wont buy them and developers will stop releasing them.

Instead Nintendo needs a different approach to getting 3rd party support and that is by unifying the handheld/console. Nintendo handhelds always have strong Japanese 3rd party support, I see no reason why the next one wont as well, by having both devices share all the same games that means Nintendo's next console will have all the Japanese 3rd party support that the handhelds are use to getting.

Instead Nintendo should sorta do what they did from Gamecube to Wii, just make a minor upgrade which allows them to release hardware at an affordable cost while still making a profit and having improved software output.

Vita is absolutely no where near PS3 level.

The only thing the Vita has over the PS3 is RAM. It has less cores in the CPU (and each is much weaker than the PS3), and a considerably weaker GPU.

It's noticeable when devs try to port PS3 games like Borderlands 2. It's insanely hard to optimize, and the end product is usually a buggy mess.

It might be feasible in 2016, but only if Nintendo wants to charge $600+ for a handheld, which they absolutely won't.

Well obviously. When I say "PS3 level," I mean "able to play games at a level close to what the PS3 can do." That something the Vita was almost doing three years ago and it was $250-$300. A Nintendo handheld will definitely be able to do it in 2016 at a $200 price tag.

There has been quite a bit discussion lately about Nintendo's next-gen devices and many people, myself included, believe Nintendo is going to unify the handheld and console by releasing two seperate devices with the same architecture and OS with similar specs that will allow all games to be played on either platform. So how powerful do you think they will be?

Some people seem to think Nintendo needs to get back into a spec war with Sony/Microsoft by releasing a powerful console that will be able to compete with PS5/Xbox4 in order to regain strong third party support. Personally I believe this is a horrible idea and that Nintendo will go for a moderate power upgrade.

The handheld version will be a moderate boost from PS Vita, similar to how 3DS is moderately more powerful than PSP. The console version will be a moderate boost from Wii U, a bit larger than Gamecube to Wii, probably somewhere right between Wii U and Xbox One.

The storage medium used will be game cards, similar to the ones DS/3DS use but higher capacity, and can be used interchangeably between both devices so that they will have identical libraries. The console will display the games at a higher resolution, likely 540p vs 1080p, and have about double the RAM, 2gb vs 4gb.

Both decives will release in late 2016 at $199 each.

I don't think the next home console will be between the Wii U and the Xbox One in terms of power, but I think it'll be a moderate boost over the PS4. I also believe they will use the ARM architecture, as that is where the future is, and it'll allow for easy backwards compatability for the 3DS.

If we compare PSP and 3DS then the next Nintendo Handheld will be roughly comparable to Vita, the next 3DS will maybe have:

- A more powerfull and modern GPU, graphics will be better than on Vita
- A much weaker CPU, many AAA and indies CPU heavy games still won't be possible on it, only Nintendo usual Mario/pokemon games like on 3DS will really shine.

The CPU in Vita is really a powerfull power hungry beast, many devs underclock the Vita's CPU during their games in order to save power.

The resolution will be also comparable to Vita, maximum 540x1920 if still stereoscopic 3D but I really expect a lower resolution like 480x1600 which would already be 2x more than 3DS, great for playing 3DS games on it, the upscaling will be perfect.

I believe the next Nintendo home console will come in 2017-2018 and will be 50% more powerful than the PS4, this will be a full 2 years before Sony/Microsoft release another console. It will come with a tablet controller similar to Wii U but it will be able to be online anywhere you go and not need to be tethered to the console. With cloud technology this will be not difficult to achieve.
As for their handheld console I'm guessing something similar with graphics abilities slightly better than the Wii...

It's pretty much impossible to guess what Nintendo's next move is going to be.

For all we know they could make a phone version of their next handheld that would skyrocket the handheld market's sales, or they could release a handheld that's a tiny bit more powerful than the 3DS but can play games at a higher resolution and would doom the handheld market.

No way to tell.
