Forums - Gaming Discussion - Consoles would benefit at running games 720p instead of 1080p.

The main problem with how you are thinking about all this is that you do not understand how graphic rendering works. Dropping a games resolution from 1080p to 720p doesn't even come close to doubling the amount of power you have to do anything else.

Resolution is affected more by memory bandwidth than it is by processing power, its impact on the demands of the complete render engine is probably less than 5%. Thing is though that a number of other factors are also mostly affected by memory bandwidth. To increase processing power resources you have to take away things that well, are entirely dependent on processing power.

Think about it this way. The GPU draws on a sheet of paper. This sheet of paper is made up of pixels. If the GPU uses 5% of its power to draw on 1080p pixels it will use about 50% less power to draw on 720p. So for 720p it will use around 3% of its power. Makes you wonder why the XB1 has so many issues rendering 1080p right? As I said earlier, the problem is memory bandwidth.

Those 1920x1080 pixels take up a certain amount of space. ALL THE TIME. So space is made for it in memory for every single frame refresh. Problem is, there are a lot of other things that also reserve memory for frame refreshes along with it. When all these things add up, a games frame buffer can hit some really big numbers and you need very fast memory to be able to move that frame buffer at 30fps/60fps. 50MB becomes a big deal when you have to move it around 30/60 times every second while still leaving enough mem bandwidth to do everything else too.

This is a very very simplified explanation of how this works, and I hope you can understand it better. Would say more but that would just be too long.

Very good explanation. Thanks.

just NO,theres a night and day then another half a night difference in 720p vs 1080p. theres extra pop everywhere in the scene as it jumps out at you, especially in side by side differences

why worry about pc,they're always gonna be more powerful, just except this now and forever

Just for fun, I decided to try scaling a Wii game. I always wished that Nintendo would make the Wii U do this, because the original resolution is pretty low, especially if you have an large HDTV. The Wii didn't quite output widescreen properly in 480p - just stretched it out, so these are just approximations.

From the OP: "Going from 480p to 720p is more noticeable than going from 720p to 1080p, and it's still hardly a difference."

I'm gonna have to disagree that it's "hardly a difference." The screenshots below are scaled to 1920x1080 (because this is what your TV is doing) and there's a large difference. I'm gonna just link to them so they don't get resized in the window - just open in a new tab to see full rez.

The bottom three are with anti-aliasing. I really really really wish more games used AA @ 720p as the jaggies are still noticeable (Mario Kart 8, I'm looking at you, though 2xAF would have helped, though it's not as noticeable as the jaggies):

The op is clearly a troll. If he states otherwise then he's simply a mouthbreather that needs to get his eyes checked.
Like someone above me says he doesn't have a basic understanding of graphic rendering neither do I and I have to say
that the explanation provided was very useful. Either way the OP tries to prove a point that can't be proven:
Resolution doesn't make a difference.

Maybe (nah, certainly) I should have stopped reading when he said that there's no big noticable difference between 1080p and 720p.
Unfortunately he was too stupid and entertaining to miss this opportunity here. (I even created this account just so I could respond. Pathetic I know)
All I can say is that there's a reason why ps4 owners still use the whole resolution point as an argument against the xbone. (psst It's because it IS noticable)
And please don't get me started on your last paragraph with the whole SD tv point. Why the hell do you think that we moved towards HD?
So, please OP get your eyes fixed so that you can join us in this age and to make sure that you don't embarrass yourself anymore on the internet or don't
and provide me with more entertaining stuff.

PS. You contradicted yourself about a million times in that post there mate, pretty impressive.

Woah! Jaggies do become much less apparent at higher resolutions, even without AA.

That's "hardly a difference"? It's like night and day.
Am I going to need to start a "1080p club" or something?

The difference between 30 fps and 60 fps is more night and day.

The difference between 480p and 720p was also more significant than 720p and 1080p.

The thing is some people have 1080p screens, while some only have 720p. Sometimes you have both but had to pick either... So a much better path would be to leave it up to us. We should be able to choose to run the game either at 1080p with 30 fps and/or lower detail versus 720p 60 fps and/or higher detail.

WTH ?

We should be getting native 1080P games. If you are playing on 32inch or less or a monitor it may not matter much but otherwise the clean and sharp looking game matters. Gfx will improve over time. It has been same previous gen as well. 720P is low or the TV needs to be setup for 720P mode. I do not like up-scaling.

Or, you know, use it to run at a better frame rate.

Yeah! I'm not sure what the PS4 is running Destiny at, but I think it was confirmed that Destiny on the Xbox One was running at 1080p and 30 FPS. I feel like I'd rather have 720 and 60 FPS. But maybe that's just me...

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.
