Forums - Gaming Discussion - Consoles would benefit at running games 720p instead of 1080p.

Well 720p looks blurry once you get used to 1080p. I agree, though, that developers should aim for 900p as that seems to be the sweetspot where it's hard to tell the difference from 1080p if your sitting a few ft away from the tv.

1) The difference is massive.

2) Without 1080p, you won't be able to see the extra detail. Metro 2033 on ultra looks no different than medium if you play it below 900p.

1 is subjective.

2 is bullshit. This is kinda like saying PS3 and PS4 look the same on a 720p TV. You don't need 1080p resolution to notice higher polygon models, better lighting, smoother frame rate, etc.

You would definetly notice that, but wouldn't your framerate be smoother if you are playing on medium?

Uhhhh..... if the cap is 60 fps and that's achieved on max setttings, no.

Aren't you adding some variables that weren't in the original statement. And in that case the framerate part of your statement makes no sence, as you say you ccould notice the difference, while if you achieve 60 fps on Ultra, then you could most deffinetly achieve 60 fps on medium which means you couldn't notice the difference (in framerate) as there is none.

Well go over it again. Putting resources into a high resolution leaves less for frame rate.

Are you seriously not aware of this? Have you ever adjusted the settings on PC games?

lol

i've been playing PC games for over 20 years

leaves less for frame rate? yes.. not a 30fps difference.

The Order going for 1920x800 was a genuine design choice (those movie bars). Previously i thought that claim was bullshit, but when they announced they were pushing 4xMSAA they somewhat confirms it as true. 1920 x 800 + 4xMSAA is about the resource equivalent of 1920 x 1080 + standard post processing.

They also extended the horizontal render view to make up for what is lost is the bars. They seem to be doing every they can to nullify the benefit of a lower pixel count

You could argue they did it to get better IQ, but that would be a pretty small gain unless you wanted that odd screen design in the first place.

I repeat, "The Order is 1920x800p for even more polished visuals while maintaining 30 fps"

Hence, they went with a sub-1080p resolution and that gave them resources to apply elsewhere. That's generally why developers make games sub-1080p.

I think you're missing my point. RAD wanted the black bars. We can spend all day debating if that was a worthwhile design choice, but the end result is they wanted them. They were now stuck with a chunk of resources they didn't really need. Simple solution? Replace the traditional post processing AA methods with a actual render method (in this case MSAA).

For comparison, Killzone's 1920x1080/TSSAA would be about the equivalent of The Order's 1920x800/4xMSAA.

Your post implies they cut the resolution purely for additional resources. Normally i'd agree, but on this occasion the trade wouldn't have been even slightly worth it unless the developer themselves WANTED that aspect ratio. Not for the resources, but for the design.

The easy answer is... it depends.

A game that maintains a solid 30 fps with no dips at 1080p could potentially achieve 60 fps at 720p. In some cases it might be between 50-60 which is still better than 30 fps. There are also games that could do a better job at maintaining 60 fps at a lower resolution.

Wolfenstein: New Order is an example of how resolution impacts frame rate. That game apparently adjusts the horizontal resolution to maintain 60 fps.

Look, you need to chill out and stop being defensive.

I merely pointed out The Order is sub-1080p because someone said its 1080p.

I also pointed out the resources not used on a true 1080p resolution is being used elsewhere in the presentation. Hence, there is no need to argue. I'm simply stating facts.

Seriously? This conversation is dragging on longer than I care. Just forget I mentioned "smoother frame rate."

No, a game running at 30fps because it has a 30fps lock but would run at 45-50fps average without that same lock could achieve 60fps at 720p. A game running at solid 30fps because that's all that it's capable of running at on the hardware, wouldn't climb to 60fps by lowering res to 720p. That's what i've been saying all along.

Let's take Destiny as an example. It's locked at 30fps. If we were to remove the lock and it didn't run any higher than 33-35fps average, then 720p would not make it 60fps. If we removed the lock and the average fps was actually (still in 1080p) ~45, then 720p would help it reach 60fps most of the time (though it'd probably still drop to 50 at times).

PC is always going to be stronger, chasing after that standard is counter productive.

Besides, running games in 1080p and 60fps produces far greater looking results than any equal (performance wise) costly increase in asset detail.

That is not true. And they aren't stronger now. (Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution with 2l engine is faster than V8 5l 510 hp RANGE ROVER SPORT)
If by better graphics you mean BF4 running on 600 $ AMD/NVIDIA - yes BF4 looks better on PC.
But I haven't seen game on a PC that looks better then Infamous, or Killzone: SF, or upcoming Uncharted 4,order 1886
(and yes - also upcoming PC titles don't look as good as the order 1886).

1st of all: Show me a desktop PC with 8 core processor and DDR5 memory.

2nd: Name a game and developer that targets 2000 USD PC.

You start your post with, "no". But we actually agree for the most part.

Some 1080p/30fps games would maintain a solid 60 fps by lowering the resolution. While some might do a frame rate between 50 - 60 fps. Like I said, "it depends."

Eitherway I stand by my original point, "Putting resources into a high resolution leaves less for frame rate."
