Forums - Gaming Discussion - Consoles would benefit at running games 720p instead of 1080p.

all video recording should just be 720p instead of 1080p for production benefit since there are not much differences...

and all the 1080p TV should stop production and just produce 720p TV for benefit since there are not much differences...

As i have also said earlier... memory bandwidth is also important. In the example you provided, if they checked the bandwidth used they would probably see that at 1080p the game ws also badwidth starved on that system. So dropping the rez, which also marginally drops its size in frame buffer allows it to fit with whatever mem bandwith the system had to give you better overall framerate gains.

Even this loos example I just gave is very very very sparse cause as I said its never really that simple. You keep dropping rez to increase fps, eventually you get to a point where the bottleneck becomes the cpu or gpu. yu overcome that, then you get to a point where the bandwidth becomes the bottle nectk again.

I just think your rpoblem is that you are attaching too much importance to something that isn't that power intensive to begin with.

I have a 770 overclocked with more than 50% more VRAM bandwidth than the PS4 so memory bandwidth plus the heavily computation intensive TressFX enabled. This is the kind of performance difference you see from moving from 1080p to 720p

So you go from 49 to 67, a 36% increase. A game made for 1080p 30 fps would go to 720p 41 fps in comparison.
How far do you have to drop res to get double the fps, 98 average?

Can get ~85 at 1046X768 game doesn't really support lower resolutions. Of course it depends on how the game renders each frame, if we look at something with a much simpler pipeline the resaults are a little bit different

Don't ask me why the 720P shot is 4:3 aspect ratio, it looked fine ingame lol

FF13 at 480p? Does that mean that Wii could run FF13?

The answer better be no.. The Wii has enough crappy games as it is right now!

1) The difference is massive.

2) Without 1080p, you won't be able to see the extra detail. Metro 2033 on ultra looks no different than medium if you play it below 900p.

The fact a game like the order is 1080p natively, and a game like ac unity is running at 1080p is all incredible

Its fantastic, but comes in sacrfice of the frame rate.

Also, The Order is 1920x800p for even more polished visuals while maintaining 30 fps. It should be noted that's a resolution with a pixel count slightly above 900p.

1 is subjective.

2 is bullshit. This is kinda like saying PS3 and PS4 look the same on a 720p TV. You don't need 1080p resolution to notice higher polygon models, better lighting, smoother frame rate, etc.

720P 60FPS>1080P 30FPS. But having said that, who cares? Why SHOULD we care? I don't recall playing Pacman in the arcades when I was 5 going "gee, this shit needs more frames per second."

Pacman ran at 60FPS. I'd bet you don't recall people saying "OMG! This looks horrible! I'm blind!" too.

The Order going for 1920x800 was a genuine design choice (those movie bars). Previously i thought that claim was bullshit, but when they announced they were pushing 4xMSAA they somewhat confirms it as true. 1920 x 800 + 4xMSAA is about the resource equivalent of 1920 x 1080 + standard post processing.

They also extended the horizontal render view to make up for what is lost is the bars. They seem to be doing every they can to nullify the benefit of a lower pixel count

You could argue they did it to get better IQ, but that would be a pretty small gain unless you wanted that odd screen design in the first place.

Yeah, create all that high quality assets and effects only to get buried with the pathetic resolution. Quite an idea, I wonder why it doesn't get picked up by the developers.
