I suppose anything is possible, but I'm gonna say no. I think Microsoft will be the next to drop out of the console business. Xbox barely outsold Gamecube, half of the 360 numbers are RROD replacements, and the Xbone has been selling at WiiU levels for months.

Why do people still say this? Do you even think about the fact that the Xbox 360 sold MORE software than the PS3, and with only half as many consoles sold I would say that is quite a f***ing impressive feat. Perhaps some of the 360 numbers are actually replacements, but it is definetly not more than 2-3 million (not saying that RROD only happened to 2-3 million, just that only 2-3 million of replacements were counted as sales).

Multiplatform games topping the sales chart for X360 over PS3 does not equal selling more software. For example, if a console has more variety of games to offer, then the numbers will be more spread out between title. It's no secret that PS3 got a lot more support by exclusive titles over time.

By "selling more software" I mean that the total amount of 360 software sold (non-digital) is higher than the total amount of PS3 software sold (also ofcourse non-digital).

Selling more software = Selling more software.

Nope, 360 was their best bet, launched 1 year early, was 200 bucks cheaper than ps3 at launch, had amazing 3rd party deals, still got caught up.

PS3 caught up because Sony was willing to sacrifice billions and billions of dollars. Hence, they bought a sales lead over the 360.

The biggest reason MS won't win a gen is because they don't care enough. Nintendo is all about gaming. Sony's best thing going might be gaming. Game consoles don't bring in mega profits these days and the market seems to be shrinking.

What industry are you looking at?

MS have been willing to sacrifice billions just to get a foot in the door

They don't care?  That's a complete cop out. Like a child when he loses who says "I wasnt trying anyway". They're in this business to be number 1. It has always been their intention, and it's reflected in their aggressive marketing and business practices.

Xbox 360 software sold: 895.95 million

PS3 software sold: 833.46 million

Source - http://www.vgchartz.com/platforms/

Microsoft sold 99.4 million games every year.

Sony sold 104.4 million games every year.

Note: this is an average and even though this is obvious I feel as though I have to say this doesn't include digital sales.

It seems MS lost billions from bad decisions, such as working with Intel and Nvidia.

Sony also lost billions bad decisions. They thought releasing a $600 console was a good idea and to eat heavy losses from price cuts.

The reality is game console are as profitable as they used to be. Many people are moving away from them. Sony is clearly out of the handheld console industry. Nintendo is struggling with a home console and 3DS isn't as successful as its predecessor. MS interests is clearly not in game consoles, period.

I'd be surprised if this isn't MS last game console. Perhaps they're going to try and close the gap between game console and PC next.

They DEFINITELY won last gen. Especially considering 360 is still outselling both Nintendo and Sonys last gen consoles to this day (according to NPD). Plus 360 killed in software sales as well.

This is where Microsofts big problem at ever outright winning a gen lies. If the US (and UK) had been a reflection of the global market, 360 would have dominated but MS are really struggling to gain traction in other EU territories and especially Japan.

Without a global appeal it's very difficult to outright win a generation. They did a bloody good job with the 360 though.

Never trusted VGC's hardware numbers and I trust their software numbers even less. Despite that, I still think 360 software sales are still ahead albeit extremely slightly.

Microsoft has won every generation....

Windows + Xbox has more exclusives, more sales and makes more money than Sony and Nintendo combined.  it's not even close to be honest...

Sony deserves a pat on the head for doing well by basically turning PS4 into a stealth Xbox, hell the biggest game for it this year is from the guys that used to make Halo, let that one sink in for a moment.

I'm happy for them though, after the beating they took with Vita, TVs, tablets, mp3 players, movies, etc, it's nice to see them have a hit.
