Forums - Gaming - Will Microsoft ever win a gen?

They won last gen in the US and UK, this should be enough. But they also brought a lot of bad things and habits to the industry, like online paywall, game destroying DVD-drives, red ring of death, untested software, day one patches, rip-off DLC, DRM and much more. You could rarely find any bug in a game before they entered the market, now even AAA-titles suffer from game breaking bugs and crashes and you get less for you money in general and have to pay extra for everything.

So I really hope they will leave the business soon, it would be much better for the customer and industry.

Well, that is simply just not true. Bugs occured everywhere all the time in the 90´s, there are even tricks do ghet through Mario64 in like 10 minutes using built in bugs :).

All the other practices are things that came before them or that others have emulated. Putting the blame on the one who was first is a cheap cop-out and a way to take blame away from those that just waited until someone made the move first, then went in to take the profits and none of the blame.

That's funny because I don't recall Sony ever resorting moneyhatting tactics, buying timed exclusives, timed exclusive DLC, and forcing parity. So yeah... reading comprehension FTL, indeed.

So you believe GTA and Final Fantasy were exclusive to the PS2 out of the good heart from the developers? EA didn´t make any sports games for Dreamcast so SEGA had to create their own sporting division. Do you seriously think EA would have skipped SEGA without some money being transferred? The most recent example is Destiny, or do you believe Activision just felt that PS4 owners should have all DLC a year before X1 owners?

Now, don´t get me wrong, they did the right thing and it basically bought them the 6th gen togethter with the DVD capabilities in the PS2. But you must realise this is done in this industry by all parties. Nintendo did it when they dominated, Sony did it when they were the leader and MS did it last gen.

And where has this "forced parity" come from? I have never seen any evidence of that but I guess you have some?

GTA was paid for by Sony to be kept exclusive for the trilogy of games (until the trilogy was complete. Aka "Timed exclusivity") that came out during the PS2 generation. Final Fantasy was a Japanese and target market affair. Sony didn't need to pay for FF exclusivity because they swallowed the lionshare of the market and also expanded the size of it to greater heights than any other generation before.

EA didn't make sports games for the dreamcast in the genesis era because of Nintendo swallowing up marketshare and keeping third party to themselves. (opposite of Sony, devs actually ran to them) Nintendo held them and they listened because they had the lionshare of the market during their reign. They had nowhere to run until Sony joined the industry. Sega was forced to create Joe Montana and other Sega brand sports games games because no one could take the risk on Sega with Nintendo around. During the Dreamcast era 2kSports had their games on the Dreamcast. Sony's entrance into the industry loosened Nintendos grip on third parties because they didnt have to fear for making profit elsewhere. Whatever Sega screwed up with the Saturn, they screwed up for themselves and those devs ran back to Sony.

Forced parity is apart of the Microsoft contract with third parties. They have the right to deny a third party if a game loses 100% parity with Sony. Sony works the opposite. If they do not have parity with Microsoft or Nintendo they demand the extra content be included in their game for their consumers. We saw this alot after Bioshock, Ninja Gaiden 2, Madd Effect and many other games. Sony gamers got all the DLC bundled in a lot of the games MS paid to keep away from them.

Yes, so they bought a timed exclusive in the form of GTA, we agree there. And both Sega and Nintendo were also big in Japan, so don´t try to rewrite history regarding Final Fantasy.

And why are you confusing Genesis with Dreamcast? That is just... weird. And focourse Sony was not to blame for anything :).

And where is the proof of this forcd parity since we dont see it anywhere this generation? Whereis the proof Sony was so focused on consumers in their forced pariy-clause? It would be great iof you atleast gave links.

"EA didn´t make any sports games for Dreamcast so SEGA had to create their own sporting division. "

Your words, not mine. You brought up the Dreamcast, I responded to that. If that was a typo thats not my fault and Segas sports division wasn't during the Dreamcast era it was during the Genesis era.

This is gaming history 101. Sega pissed off the third parties who were going put games on their console by prematurely pushing the date the date of the Saturn during the same gen the PS originally came out. Sega blindsided them with their release date and pissed them all off so they ran to Sony.

Here is a dev most recently talking about Microsofts parity clause and the annoyance that it is in May.

Sony is no angel, but I think third parties would agree that they were a breath of fresh air when they had Nintendo and Sega to contend with. A lot of them were unhappy with how Nintendo was dealing with their third party relationships and Sega just had bad management all around which led to their demise.

tbh I think they have a greater chance of winning a gen than nintendo do.
The one time sony slips up, MS will take the win.

It can happen but.....Nintendo and Sony.

No because either Sony stays the same and eliminates all competition
Or Nintendo is innovative and beats both

Thanks for all the great memories!

No way

To be honest the console wars since Sony entered have not been very......competetive. Besides the PS3, which we all know was a massive screw up, they (Sony) have destroyed the competetion and I am fairly certain that is going to happen this gen as well, albeit not with the same margins as PS1/2. To win 3 out of the 4 gens you participate in is not bad.
