Super Paper Mario is probably my 3rd favorite in the series beating out TTYD. I never really played the M&L series. I tried a demo of Dream Team but didn't care enough to drop $40.
Yoshi Story was pretty good but I haven't played any of the others. I would've gotten Yarn Yoshi if I kept my Wii U.
Mario & Luigi games have a nice charm to them but has a lacks many Rpg mechanics. For myself I'm not much of a rpg player which is why I like Super paper Mario over the other two (Never played sticker star).
The yoshi series has the most messed up fans ever most love only the first game and say every other one sucks, even though Story and Yoishi island DS were pretty good.
Consoles: 3DS, Wii U, and Vita soon. Super Paper Mario fan.
They sure are good games but never better than the top entries in both the 2D and 3D platformers.
What do you consider the top entries for each then?
My favorite 3D Mario is Super Mario 64.
I haven't played much 2D Mario but I guess I'd pick Super Mario World from my limited time with it...
I haven't played a ton of 3D Mario, but the best 2D Mario is certainly Super Mario World...there is so much great stuff about that game, like the amazing special world which has a few of my favorite levels ever...
PS: Super Paper Mario was one of the most disappointing games I played on Wii. Just got Paper Mario from Club Nintendo a few days ago and I really hope I enjoy it more. I've heard a lot of people think TTYD is the best in the series though.

:( It's always sad to see someone hate you're favorite game... Except I see it every day unlike most people.

Yeah, I know the feel...I'm a Skyward Sword fan ;-;
@Trucks: NSMBU?! Wow, thats some high praise. I've always thought it looked miles better than the other NSMB games but I don't have a Wii U to play it yet.

I think Super Paper Mario gets a lot of hate just because it's such a departure from the other Paper Mario games. I went in knowning it wouldn't be TTYD and enjoyed it quite a lot.
Same thing happened with Chrono Cross, I would like it a lot more if it wasn't a sequel to Chrono Trigger. Because as a sequel to Chrono Trigger, it totally sucks, as a Squaresoft RPG, it's a decent entry.

I would personally want a total reboot with different characters, a new story, and gameplay going back to classic RE roots.
Sounds good to me.
Although, I've been thinking about some of the criticisms fans of the later games make and, honestly, I can understand a lot of them. Now, to be clear, I don't share their feelings, but I got to thinking about it and it occurred to me, with the power of today's hardware, I think that both old-school and newer fans could be accommodated.
I mean, let's face it, the reason they opted for the pre-rendered environments back in the day is because the hardware at the time simply wasn't powerful enough to render detailed 3D environments. But that's no longer a problem. So, what if they were to make the game in full 3D but create two gameplay modes? You could have a classic mode (tank controls, camera angles, etc) for people like us, and an over-the-shoulder mode for fans of the newer games.
Now, one thing I wouldn't want to compromise on is the "less-is-more" approach. It would still have to be a survival horror game. Stealth... conserving ammo... more anticipation of combat than actual combat, if that makes sense. So, perhaps it would still be less appealing to the more action-oriented fans, but at least they wouldn't have to contend with a camera/control scheme they don't like.
I don't know. It's just a thought. The thing is, there's no longer any reason we can't do both. Back when the original series came out, sure, it wasn't possible. But the technical barrier is gone now. It would be perfectly feasible to create an RE game which at least has a control scheme for both old fans and new.

Oh, yes please! That would be awesome! Can you imagine a next-gen version of the Nemesis stalking you from one area to another? Damn!

... but I don't think that'll happen.
Maybe not officially, but there are fan projects out there. Here's one I came across a while back. I don't know if it's actually available to play but someone made an RE2 "Remake" of sorts using assets from The Darkside Chronicles. It actually looks pretty good, though much of it does use the over-the-shoulder approach...
I won't post them all here. If you're interested, you can see the rest on his Youtube page...
