At $499 a decline was antcipated.

The big numbers at launch were better than anticipated.

Wii U had a great launch too.

At $499?

In which the majority of those sales were incredibly front loaded to the X1's first quarter. Its sales are really inconsistent.

Still pretty impressive for a platform with "no demand."

I didn't claim they were breaking records.

And I didn't say that you claimed that they were breaking records.

After the first quarter, X1 sales fell off a cliff. For instance, X1 sales from the April NPD showed that they were worse than any of the 360's NPDs. Yes, even the 360's April 2013 NPD was better than the X1's first April sales in the US. I'm hardly impressed with its launch if it can't maintain the momentum.

Would you say PS4 sales felt off a cliff?

April and May weren´t that impressive for PS4, as we don´t have any official sales figure, but I wouldn´t be surprised they where bellow 360´s avarege years.

Launch is never indicative of how a system performs on the long run. Consistency is key and the X1 is failing in that component. The best consoles in history were the best because they sold well consistently, not because they sold a lot at launch.

Consoles sell well consistently especially after price cuts. The PS3 is a fine example of that.

MS may have to do the same to stay competitive and relevant.

MS made a bad move at releasing X1 with Kinect. Sony learned their lesson and that's is why PS4 is $399, not $599.

Sony fans have quickly forgotten PS3 and Vita were back to back disasters. So MS fucked up too, it happens.

I don't know, I think microsoft can still pull it out (no pun here folks!). It's still pretty early, perceptions can shift. Especially if they are still shooting for a 10 year life cycle.

Biggest problem the xbox one had/has was their leadership team. Mattrick was a joke, he deserves to be at zynga, not head of xbox. He was nothing but a train wreck as the head of xbox and his leadership during a console transition can be considered nothing less than a nightmare.

However, Microsoft has done a lot to rectify the issues Mattrick left them. In time, with some big hitters like Halo, they can at least pull even in NA and UK. Europe may be a lost cause. However, they could still make some gains in emerging markets like China, South America, etc. It's not a completely lost cause for Microsoft, I still think they can get close to what the 360 sold, 70 million or so...

Perceptions can shift, but the underpowered hardware can't.  Nothing will change the fact that games will ALWAYS look and PLAY better on the competing PS4.  Nothing will change the fact that on multiplatform games, the PS4 is going to be the lead console.  You can change the marketing and push GAMES, GAMES, GAMES (echoes of Ballmer here) all you want, but the public already knows which console is better, and that is reflected in the sales.  Price cuts aren't going to help, Sunset Overhype isn't going to help, Halo 1-4 regurgitated isn't going to help.  Expect moderate to slow sales through the rest of it's probably short lifespan.

The problem isn't what MS is doing NOW...it's what was done since the Xbox One was first conceived.  It was designed, NOT to be the best game console, but to be the "center of your living room"...to be a multimedia hub in a closed ecosystem that MS controlled and profits from.  GAMERS almost universally rejected that flawed "vision", and unfortunately, the hardware is already set, so there really isn't any "fixing" it at this point.  They are stuck, and they know it!

I always thought PS3 was more powerfull and had better looking games.

Wasn´t until I bought the 360 (because it was cheaper) that I realized that most of multplat used to look better on the Xbox. And I wouldn´t care if it was the other way arroundd.

You are overestimating what the general public perception is. Do you realise that there are people that thinks iPhones and MacBooks are more powerfull than a Android and PC because the former are more expencive and "look" better?

People don´t do pixel counting. They buy what is cheaper and agregate a interesting value.

Technicaly it is still at the same price with Kinect. Looking for what happened in March I think the $399 with Kinect or the $449 with Kinect and a game are the sweet spot for this year.

And if Amazon bestsellers charts oracle are of any indication of sales behavior the Kinect vs Kinectless will be 50/50

It took Sony 3 years and 5bi losses to start turn the PS3 arround.

Microsoft in 6 months removed all that people here complained about. And for that same people that asked for no DRM, no apps pay wall and no Kinect are the same saing XOne has no chance against the all might PS4.

For those people dosen´t matter the price, dosen´t matter the apps and eccosistem, doesn´t matter the games the XOne is doomed.

Now the XOne is just a more powerfull 360, just as the PS4 is a more power PS3. Thinking consumers will still wonder about multiplat resolution is, with all respect, BULL SHIT.

Consumer's might not understand what 1080p vs 720/792/900p actually mean. But most of them know that 1080p>900p, its common knowledge know that the PS4 has the best console multiplats, its futile to try and contest this. Last gen that went to the 360 hence one of the main reasons it did so well. Its ludicrous to think that the PS4 would not benefit from that advantage to a greater degree. 360 vs PS3 was a matter of less than 10 frames most of the time while now its 30~ fps difference and or 40-60% reso difference.

Multiplats matter and that advantage will always be PS4, at best X1 can only meet PS4 at "parity", consumers aren't going to pay the same for a lesser experience, not to mention the apps and ecosystem are basically identical.

I don't really consider the X1 situation a price cut. Its a Kinect cut.

Doesn't really matter, I think we can all agree $499 was a stupid move. On the bright side, I look forward to seeing MS be competitive.

Show me a game on PS4 with ~30 more frames than XOne, please, because the last I checked Tomb Raider DE avarage fps was 50 or less.

My point remains, do you think that every one 300mi people that bought last gen consoles were aware of multplat "parity", or resolution or fps?

I wasn´t, most of my friends weren´t. They bought 360 and know XOne because they were cheaper, a lot, here in Brazil (there was the fact that the 360 could be jailbraked but lets ignore it).

Despite a bad launch XB1 should still hold a 50% North American market share. Americans will buy a crapier product just because it's American. This why why GM still exists.

Plus if last generation is anything to go on, XB1 could still redeem itself in 3-4 years time if they make some great exclsives (which I doubt).

-----

I'm more interested to see if Nintendo can salvage the WiiU and keep sales above XB1. It is a battle for 2nd, not 1st.
