Forums - Gaming - Phil Fish: Youtubers are Theifs.

I watch a few game players on youtube (youtubers is a stupid word) and I mostly watch them not for the game but their personality and opinions they have, sure games help watching them and the games are the reason I watched to begin with. I have as well been known to buy games I see people play because they seem to be enjoying them so I thought, I could too. However, Fish is right.

If I put all of Frasier on youtube and then got the money from that to only me the TV studio would come at me, shut me down and sue me. But here are developers making games which other people are using to make money none of which is going to the developer/publisher. It's very dishonest of the youtube users to do anything but agree with him. In order to support their chosen career they need to support that which feeds them. No games means no content.

Also, 'Thieves'.

I disagree with his hyperbolic choice of words, but there certainly is a point to be made about people profiting directly from the work of others (with minimal effort) without the original creators seeing a penny.

I´d love to see an even revenue split between the publisher/developer and the Youtube-person.

I agree with Phil.

I always have agreed with him on most things he've said.

I may not be particularly fond of his game, and I do take pity at him for his awkward social performances, but the man speaks truth when he does speak.

And the canceling of Fez 2 will go down in internet history as one of the greatest stunts and lessons about personal hetzes from game obsessed internet culture.

You guys sure did smash that sand castle.

Read the OP, there is something like that in play. however publishers realize that Youtube videos help promote their games more, so most dont bother doing it.

I love let's plays! One let's play even convienced me not to buy Phil's overrated indie game!

He has a point tho.
Games like league of legends, dota, counter strike, CoD and so on all gain popularity and publicity with twitch and youtube.
But games like Beyond: two souls, The last of us, The walking dead: telltale and so on all lose revenue because of these walkthroughs.

Why would anyone want to see these games on youtube if they have any intention to buy it ?

No direct loss, no thief

Youtubers != Let's players

That's an even worse term, "Let's players". Although, do they not use youtube? Youtube is the main outlet of these things, but I know some people have their own websites. Trying to distinguish between the 2 doesn't mean their career isn't built off other people's work.

Hmm, pie.

He's right

mehh... I think it's pretty obvious that games played by guys like pewdiepie sell only that good because these guys play them. Nobody would care about some games without guys like him.

Especially indie horror games are in my opinion only so successful right now because let's player invest their time to promote these games.

That's how I see it. Let's players invest many hours in a game (playing, cutting, uploading and so on) and it's free advertisement for the developer and even if the game is shit, it sells good if some let's players play it.

Games like Outlast and Amnesia or even bigger games like Dark Souls and TLoU got a lot of free advertisement on Youtube.
