Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto: VR is one person putting on some goggles, playing by themselves in a corner

He has a lot of good points. The technology in its current state is exactly what he described. In the future, it will improve, but we're not there yet. Sword Art Online is still a LONG way away. Decades at the very least.

"that’s in direct contrast with what it is we’re trying to achieve with Wii U,"

Really? Is that why there is one controller that only one person can see whats going on with it. Why the menu is controlled by this controller and only the person holding it can see the menu. Is this why the very existence of the gamepad made me wonder how the thing would even be multiplayer, until IU actually bought one and realized it works with wiimotes etc.

*Sigh*, again a website takes a quote out of context. If you are going to quote something, quote the whole thing!

Thanks for that. This puts things into context. He's not really having a shot at VR.

VR can be a social experience aswell just not a locally social experience unless two people play with 2 headsets at the same time in one room.

Makes sense. Nintendo's strength in home consoles for the 21st century has been local multiplayer, something quite tangential to VR's applications.

Kind of reminds me of old man Yamauchi and RPG players, though

I haven't seen anyone use that word outside of mathematics, and I do believe that you didn't quite do it right (?).

While it is used in math, it's not specific to math. It's reference is tangent, the non math usage. "He went off on a tangent during his speech". It basically means it's not in line with Nintendo's current direction.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

I bet Nintendo would know all about that with the virtual boy.

They said the same thing about local and online co-op and put it in when they feel like it. In other words they just do what they feel like. Not sure the Wii U has the power for VR anyways.

VR has been around since the 80's, and usable for the public during the 90's. The Wii U's capabilities have very little to do with the ability to produce VR.

I guess. But to the extent of Oculus and Morpheus? Probably not.

WTH is playing on the Wii U gamepad then? It's a completely solitary experience.

He is right though. Unless they utlilize it in other ways, it is just going to be one person putting on goggles and playing it on a corner. Not like Nintendo needs to copy of anything. They do a nice job doing their own way, even if Wii U didn't start well, but then sales showed it just needed the right software.
