I haven't seen anyone use that word outside of mathematics, and I do believe that you didn't quite do it right (?).

While it is used in math, it's not specific to math. It's reference is tangent, the non math usage. "He went off on a tangent during his speech". It basically means it's not in line with Nintendo's current direction.
