Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto: VR is one person putting on some goggles, playing by themselves in a corner

Must be why they half assed it all those years ago.  I personally don't care about the tech, but Nintendo is downplaying it because they're not doing it.

Well, to be fair... Gunpei Yokoi said the VirtualBoy was not ready to be released, but Nintendo rushed it out to market a year too early. Because of that, it flopped. Gunpei Yokai didn't want to release the VirtualBoy until the parts to make it color were cheap enough to produce. This was Yamauchi's failure. Shigeru Miyamoto had little to do with this machine.

Sounds a lot like a 3DS

Kind of reminds me of old man Yamauchi and RPG players, though

First thing that came up in my head when I saw this topic. I can't say anything on this since I don't know what Oculus is capable of, but I know Yamauchi was wrong. Even though I mostly sit by myself in a dark room when I play RPG games..

Yep.

Damn it how do you embed?

Press the HTML button when editing the post and paste the code there.

OT: Miyamoto says the truth. And while there may be money to be made with VR, other developers already beat them to it and will milk the VR cow dry. Similarly to how Nintendo did with motion controls.

boy was nintendos line of handhelds. VR now means home console...

So is PC gaming lol

As opposed to what, sitting in the corner playing by yourself without a headset on? What's the difference when most people play games on their own

I think it's worth reading the original Time interview to get the proper context. The Verge article unfortunately represents only a small piece of the interview, perhaps purposefully so.

"As game designers, we at Nintendo are interested in VR technology and what it can do, but at the same time what we’re trying to do with Wii U is to create games for everyone in the living room. We want the Wii U to be a game system that brings video gamers into the living room. As as I explained last night [Sunday, June 8], it’s intended to be fun not only for the person who’s playing, but also for the people who are watching."

I think this is a perfectly acceptable response given Nintendo's longtime commitment to local multiplayer. I don't think it's sour grapes at all; I think it's the honest response of someone who believes games are meant to be experienced and played with others in a common space.

If vr goes big you can expect ninty next console if there is one will not support it and will be as relevant to the market as the wiiu is now. They seem way to out of touch with where the market is heading and plenty blame can be assigned to Miyamoto. I wonder how long ago he went from their biggest strength to what is holding them back.
