Forums - Nintendo - Should Miyamoto retire before he destroys his legacy?

In order to destroy his legacy, Miyamoto would probably have to spend the next 30 years making lousy games and also start a war or two. He's the greatest game maker of all time; he's developed, designed, directed, or produced dozens of Nintendo's greatest hits; and he's mentored a legion of young Nintendo developers. Let him make some pet projects as he enters his twilight years. He's earned it.

So basically It's impossible to destroy his legacy. He'll probably only live another 10-20 years!

So, apparently you're not aware of something called the development process. Do you think Naughty Dog just sits down and two months later has Uncharted 3? Not exactly how it works.

You start with a rough idea. A first draft, similar to what you've have in every other medium. First drafts, generally speaking, are not that great. There is probably something good and worthwhile in there, but it's unpolished and needs serious revision.

The products shown at E3, particularly Star Fox, were drafts. Ideas that will hopefully be further developed. I think Project Guard and more so Project Robot, looked pretty neat. Obviously neither is a full product ready to be sold for $60 (although I'd totally pay 5-10 dollars for Robo) so they're obviously not perfect. What they certainly are is creative and unique (and if you can't see how Guard is different from other tower defense games then you haven't seen it or you haven't played other tower defense games).

Star Fox wasn't revealed because it wasn't ready. Simple as that. Nintendo wanted to show their fans it was in development, but the game wasn't ready for a full blown reveal. You could question whether Nintendo should have shown anything at all if they weren't going for a full blown reveal, but that has little to do with Miyamoto's skill or value.

Basically, you're suggesting a man who has arguably created more revolutionary games than anyone else in the industry because one game wasn't good and because 3 demos he was working at aren't fully polished games. Internet sensationalism at its finest.

Retire? Certainly not.
He shouldn't be Nintendo's main card these days, though. They should seriously diversify.

His failures will never outweigh his numerous resounding successes, but I think the real issue here is that he's hurting Nintendo by making games consumers don't want. He doesn't understand the mass market anymore, and he needs to make way for someone who does.

because he showed 3 games in pre-alpha stages? A LOT can happen between now and then. Christ almighty save this thread.

Go back and rewatch that embarassment known as Giant Robot and tell me that's something you would expect from the creator of Ocarina of Time.

They want an epic traditional Starfox, not an episodic Starfox-themed Nintendoland, which it what it will be according to interviews so far.

I never thought I'd ever want Nintendo to not release a Star Fox game. Give it to someone else. Seriously. God please. Anyone else. He's going to kill the franchise. He's going to release a game that no one will buy, it won't sell, and they'll kill it off because they'll think it isn't financially viable.

No, Miyamoto. It's because no one what's your shit idea of a Star Fox game. Or the other two games. Nintendo should be embarrassed that they even showed that stuff off. The reaction to those games where not positive. I seriously hope they don't think its because it's "in alpha." They're literally shoehorning the gamepad in.

It was perfect. Just a map. All we needed was a map. The map was literally perfect in Wind Waker. A map would be perfect for the gamepad. A rear view mirror would have been perfect. Item switching. Anything else. Gyro aiming for co-op only? Fine. That's awesome. For single player? It's called a second analog stick.

Hell no, just because one damn game in it's alpha stage? I think you need to go to school for game design because I bet you sure as hell can't come up with a non-borrowed unique idea.

Miyamoto oversees most projects at Nintendo, so hes far from embarrassing himself. Also hes 61, give the guy a break...
