Forums - Nintendo - I feel like Nintendo is in big trouble at this point. Here's why:

Apparently you sincerely believe that the Wii U followed the same strategy as the Wii.

It's definitely not following the same strategy as the GCN.

But it is.

1. Direct competition with Sony and Microsoft.
2. Hardware sold at a loss as a result.
3. Talking about how they want to win over the hardcore gamer.
4. Gimmick as a unique selling point to differentiate itself from the competition. The Gamepad is the GC-GBA connectivity integrated into the main controller. The Gamepad also falls into the same category as the Xbox One's Kinect and the PS4's touch pad on the DualShock 4. All systems were intended to have all the same games with only a few minor features setting them apart.

The Wii U is a repackaged GC that tried to fix the perceived problems of the GC.

1. Late launch. The Wii U launched before the competition.
2. Lack of a strong brand. The Wii brand was slapped on a console that hardly resembles what Wii was about.

There were some minor adjustments made to the strategy, but at the core it's the same.

Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Party were on the GameCube?

The Wii U now has equivalents/sequels to like 80% of the top selling Wii titles available for it

Wii Sports (Wii Sports Club)

Wii Fit (Wii Fit U)

Mario Kart Wii (Mario Kart 8)

New Super Mario Bros. U (NSMBU)

Super Mario Galaxy (Mario 3D World)

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (not out yet)

Wii Party (Wii Party U)

Mario Party 8 (not out yet)

Mario & Sonic Olympics (Mario & Sonic Sochi)

Donkey Kong Country Returns (DKC Tropical Freeze)

It's branded as the WII U, it looks like the Wii, in Japan it comes bundled with the Wiimote and Wii Sports and that still hasn't bumped sales at all. Wii U has the same design philosophy as the Wii -- emphasis on small, non threatening console (check), minimal storage space, hardware that's basically 1 generation behind the current generation (check).

Sorry but you're in massive, massive denial.

Are you kidding?  They are clearly following the same strategy as the Wii.  Make a standard, slightly better than last-gen console, and then strip down features and add a gimmick.

Do you understand the difference between profit and loss?

Yes, but I am not sure what that has to do with talking about which strategy they are following.  Except maybe that their Wii strategy is costing them a lot of loss lol

Irrefutable evidence that you have no clue whatsoever.

So enlighten us all knowing one.

Nintendo is healthy.

Your claim: "The Wii and Wii U followed the same strategy."

The facts:

1. The Wii was sold at a profit.
2. The Wii U was sold at a loss.

The explanation (shouldn't be necessary, but in this case it is):

1. Profit means that a business gains money.
2. Loss means that a business loses money.
3. Profit =/= loss.

That's the slippery slope of relying on gimmicks to sell your console rather than just making a "normal" console.

Eventually your R&D will run out of ideas because it's simply not easy to come up with ideas like that every 5 years (if it was everyone would do it).

Then you get end up gambling on expensive gimmicks like the Wii U tablet, 3DS 3D screen, or Kinect 2.0 sensor ... and we've seen the results when the audience doesn't go gaga over it, you're basically screwed. At least MS still has third party support to fall back on though, Nintendo doesn't even have that.

Sony is the only one that made a straight forward "normal" console this gen ... and they are kicking everyone else's ass because consumers eventually grew tired of control/screen gimmicks. With smartphones/tablets that route is simply a dead end now, which left a lot of core gamers who were tired of the PS3/360, but Sony is the only one that bothered to directly serve that audience.

So that's it.  Because it was sold at an incredibly slight loss it is not following a similar strategy? Just because one thing is different, doesn't mean these things aren't true:

-It was launched with inferior processing capabilities that held it back to last gen ports.

-It's online capabilities and features are more than a generation behind the competition.

-It uses very little energy and comes in a small package.

-It has "Wii" in the name lol.

-It has an unconventional gimmick as its main selling point.

Add to that they very obviously tried to replicate the Wii launch just in a different way. Nintendo Land very obviously was supposed to be "Wii Sports" for the Wii U and demo the game pad with a variety of mini-games. NSMBU was supposed to be the core Nintendo title like Twilight Princess was, except 2D Mario has far more casual appeal to boot and is a bigger seller.

That was their logic. They just didn't realize the audience had completely moved on.

Go third party, but don't stop releasing the games on Wii U also.

Wii U owners happy.
Making money.

This.

Release your magical games on a real modern hardware/OS. Not on some exclusive, outdated, expensive Mario-only box/OS:

PROS for us:

- Mario + zelda along with our third parties on the same box.

- Modern Graphics (you want Mario Kart with a decent AA? you want smooth 60fps instead of a constantly stuttering 59fps beccause of a 14 years old CPU? No problem on a modern hardware, PS4 or XB1.

- Pads with analog triggers

- Unified account (really with all the bells, not sure if Nintendo has a real unified account now)

- Trophies

- Fast OS.

- Less expensive as we don't have to buy a dedicated Mario box.

- Etc

CONS: There are no known cons for us, only for Nintendo:

- Nintendo can't freakly control their hardware and impose useless gimmicks.
