Your claim: "The Wii and Wii U followed the same strategy." The facts: 1. The Wii was sold at a profit. The explanation (shouldn't be necessary, but in this case it is): 1. Profit means that a business gains money. |
That's the slippery slope of relying on gimmicks to sell your console rather than just making a "normal" console.
Eventually your R&D will run out of ideas because it's simply not easy to come up with ideas like that every 5 years (if it was everyone would do it).
Then you get end up gambling on expensive gimmicks like the Wii U tablet, 3DS 3D screen, or Kinect 2.0 sensor ... and we've seen the results when the audience doesn't go gaga over it, you're basically screwed. At least MS still has third party support to fall back on though, Nintendo doesn't even have that.
Sony is the only one that made a straight forward "normal" console this gen ... and they are kicking everyone else's ass because consumers eventually grew tired of control/screen gimmicks. With smartphones/tablets that route is simply a dead end now, which left a lot of core gamers who were tired of the PS3/360, but Sony is the only one that bothered to directly serve that audience.
