Forums - Nintendo - I feel like Nintendo is in big trouble at this point. Here's why:

They could but since online isn't priority for them as it doesn't really vibe with their family friendly image, then they're obviously not going to invest a ton of money into making the online that great. And really who's to say that Nintendo doesn't quite enjoy making you pay double to play VC games on both the 3DS and Wii U?

The real reason I think they also hold back from too many VC games is not a technical issue at all ... they want people paying full price for their new games, not getting full off lower priced old games.

More VC games would be great but they could also go for more retail and indie games as well. Their family friendly image isn't really working for them right now though. Times change, Nintendo needs some change as well. There's no reason they can't still keep their family friendly image while also being more modern and competitive with Microsoft and Sony rather than solely relying on their own demographic.

You guys are definitely more educated on the subject, so I'd be glad to continue the conversation with you.

As far as having cross buy for identicle titles like VC and indie games, I totally agree. They have a unified account system now. You shouldn't be paying twice for the exact same game. If I remember correctly, cross buy is something that Nintendo is working on though. My guess would be it's an issue with the 3DS. There might just not be enough room in the 3DS' internal memory for the larger firmware files needed to code a more complex system like that. The 3DS store is bare bones. I don't like it at all.

I understand why people hate on the 3DS store, but why the WiiU's? I find it to be great. It loads quick, popular and new games are all on the front page, easy to find links to the VC, indie, demo, and digital games sections. A decent search engine, and that catchy music that seems to change every time I'm on there. Most retail releases are there. The VC was lacking at first but they seem to be releasing VC games a lot quicker now. My only complaint would be that there aren't many demos. That would be a choice made by the developers though. Not Nintendo. I personally like the WiiU's store a lot more than the PS3's.

I don't understand why people make such a big deal about having more than one 3DS or WiiU linked to the same account either. It seems like something only a very small percentage of people would need. The majority of people would just use it for stealing games like me and my friends do with PSN..

It makes a massive difference when you switch consoles, upgrade to newer models, or replace old ones.  It isn't something to be debated imo because it is such a no-brainer.  No one had to tell Sony, PS2 games and the PS3 at launch had one unfied account you could redownload.  It would be like needing a new apple account every time you get a new apple device.  All your music and apps are gone!

If Nintendo wants to compete with a conventional console then they're going to have to step their game up. The online infrastructure and 3rd party support have to be fixed. They need to erase their kiddy image and market directly to core gamers.

Or they could just throw another curveball like the Wii and hope for the best.

The problem is that the Wii was clearly a lucky fluke.  It isn't easy (Or plannable) to have a business model that reinvents the wheel every 5 years.  They need to figure out what kind of image and services they want to define them, and then hammer it in year after year.

so i gues nintendo should be more like sony and try to sell the wii u off of propaganda and hype. dont worry about making games, just make a powerful, but cheap console and make sure you all the third party companies port their games on it. then make a lot of adds and get the public to believe its going to be better than the competition. lol yeah, thatd work.

LOL some of us call it content!

what kind of content do you have on ps4? what is their biggest exclusive this year that we know about? the last of us? lol. (believe me, i dont think that wwhd really needed to be made at all, but you know what? at least that is a 10+ year old game). sony needs to make sure they have something up their sleeves, completely unexpected, this e3. there needs to be some significant announcement that you can only experience on ps4. if that doesnt happen, and ps4 suffers a year of no games (kind of like the wii u did), then i see the tides turning more drastically than you guys think.

I mean I already have InFamous: SS and I got Don't Starve free (Which I love).  As for a year of no games...Nope!  Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, Drive Club, Far Cry 4, Battlefield Hardline, and about a dozen other games say "Hi" lol.  See how that third party advantage hits like a ton of bricks?

Apparently you sincerely believe that the Wii U followed the same strategy as the Wii.

It's definitely not following the same strategy as the GCN.

This is a joke thread. I don't care if you think otherwise.

It isn't a joke. We might see only one Console in future which plays discs and we mostly migrate to Online and digital after that because of technology being affordable and best. So, Sony and Microsoft already started their Networking solutions with Gaikai and Azure but Nintendo doesn't have have anything like that and not even basic network (which they are trying still now recently with NNID etc.,) and also they are losing momenutum being terrible in Home console and not meeting their expectations in Handheld which is going to get worse in future. They should make major changes and come being competitive with Sony/Microsoft in hardware power and helping/funding development for 3rd partities to get their support, launching a good network infrastucture, making more new matured  and family IP's to balance the consumers base of theirs and current hardcore market, providing more value to gamers with services like PS+ etc.,  Otherwise they have to move to other kind of gaming section or media like they did with Wii and now going with QOL (or) they are going to face losses in future in gaming.

Heh, you would think that they would already have some plan in motion if they were going to redefine the definition of video game platforms in two years.

If Nintendo get massive 3rd Party Support won't that automatically reduce sales of their own Nintendo games?

It's amazing that people don't see one negative benefiting the other. Why do think a company like Sony or MS have so few historically successful first party successes?

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

It's definitely not following the same strategy as the GCN.

They are releasing a Gamecube Controller port for the Wii U and Smash. Not only that, they have clearly targeted this E3 for core gamer fans of the Smash Series from GCN generation especially. You read them as out of touch, but you refuse to accept that you're seeing that company through beer goggles.

aggreed!! he want's a new console in 2016 and 2020...... because the future is trully in consoles?!? NOT.

The future of Nintendo is in peripherals and softwares. In the future consoles will be the size of apple tv and will cost less then $99.

Are you kidding?  They are clearly following the same strategy as the Wii.  Make a standard, slightly better than last-gen console, and then strip down features and add a gimmick.

But it is.

1. Direct competition with Sony and Microsoft.
2. Hardware sold at a loss as a result.
3. Talking about how they want to win over the hardcore gamer.
4. Gimmick as a unique selling point to differentiate itself from the competition. The Gamepad is the GC-GBA connectivity integrated into the main controller. The Gamepad also falls into the same category as the Xbox One's Kinect and the PS4's touch pad on the DualShock 4. All systems were intended to have all the same games with only a few minor features setting them apart.

The Wii U is a repackaged GC that tried to fix the perceived problems of the GC.

1. Late launch. The Wii U launched before the competition.
2. Lack of a strong brand. The Wii brand was slapped on a console that hardly resembles what Wii was about.

There were some minor adjustments made to the strategy, but at the core it's the same.

1. It's not in direct competition with Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo has explicitely said that/

2. I'm pretty sure the GCN wasn't sold at a loss.

3. They said the same kind of things with the Wii. It's PR, not direction.

4. The Wii U gimmick is absolutely nothing like the GCN gimmick.

The Wii U is incomparable to any prior Nintendo console. It's nothing like any of them.
