Forums - Nintendo - The real reason Wii U is considered "underpowered"?

The CPU on the Wii U lags a little behind the PS3 and 360, let alone the PS4 and One. The Wii U also has no hard drive, a fourth of the RAM of the other consoles, and a much different (and inferior) architecture.

But the biggest problem? The idiots at Nintendo named it after the FREAKIN WII. C'MON.

A lot of consumers associate Wii as being far behind the 360 and PS3 in terms of power, so that stigma carries over.

I still prefer my Wii U to my PS4 (at least until the PS4 gets some actual games out), but Nintendo screwed up big time.

I dont think the biggest problem is that it named it after the wii cause the wii was a hit and a well known name with the casuals... But the biggest problem imo is the U after the wii cause no one knows what the heck a wiiU is, specially the casuals... If they named it a Wii2 or WiiHD or WiiFapU or something that actually makes sense in English that didn't confuse the customers, I think it would have sold more cause for the longest time, all the consumers were thinking is that its a $350 tablet accessory

But, even though the Wii was popular at the beginning of last gen, casuals moved away from it due to smartphones and its last three years were mediocre. This generation is all about the core market, and Nintendo didn't anticipate that, so they tried to build on the Wii, but in the process just made some core gamers shy away from it ("Wii" is practically synonymous with "casual"). Naming it something original would allow them to rebuild their identity with core gamers, but Nintendo didn't look ahead and it bit them.

Yea but so was the 360's but the X1 is doing fine! Heck, Skyward Sword and Xenoblade came in the last years of the wii and those were great games, specially Xenoblade... I think what made the core gamers shy away was that it was not on par with the ps4/x1 in terms of hardware + no third party support but I doubt that it was the wii name of the wiiU although I doubt there is anyway to know for sure

The 360 did pretty well with the core audience regardless (a lot better than the Wii, at least), and while I agree that those games were great (I love the hell out of Xenoblade), at that point a lot of core gamers had already shunned the Wii.

I'm really only speaking from personal experience though, a lot of my friends believe the Wii U is a casual console just like the Wii, so they refuse to buy it.

That consumption is on stand-by, not full load.

Cool, so when I play my Wii games on the U, I actually SAVE MONEY?

Thats what I call futureproof, next gen tech.

Its a stupid reason.

The wii U currently has the most 1080p 60fps games and more are coming (mk8 confirmed to be , unless more than 2 players or something.)

This graph shows in great detail why the Wii U is considered underpowered by many. PS4 seems be 4 times "stronger" and XB1 5-6 times "stronger". It consumes less energy than even the Wii. So, than that means  Wii U is GC 2.0 confirmed!

Hope this is a joke as "power" normally refers to how many terraflops it can do, not the power consumption of the unit.

Xbox One/ PS4 could run any Wii-U version of a game in 4k resolution.... PS4 with room to spare.

You could literally be graphing porn viewership changes from generation to generation; I gave no idea what any of this means.

Doesn't mean much really. If the graph was very accurate it would mean Xb one is 15-30% more powerful than PS4, and we all know it's the other way around. And we also know that Wii U isn't <1/5th as powerful as PS4. More like 1/2.

It is much more complicated than that. If you have simple cartoonish graphics, even PS2 could technically do 1080p 60 fps (if it could output 1080p). Heck, there were 1080p games over 15 years ago on PC.

And you have to remember that even 360 and PS3 have several 1080p 60fps games too. Most game makers just want complicated models and effects instead of simple models but high resolution. With simpler models even 360 and PS3 would have no problem doing 1080p 60fps.

So how does it feel Xb1 fans, my hoover is more powerful than your console!
