Forums - Microsoft - Disgusted with the loss of Innovation (Kinect)? (/rant)

It was up to MS to convince those consumers that Kinect is a must have...and they failed, just like Nintendo managed to do that with Wiimote and failed with Gamepad.

Personally, I would rather that both PS4 and XOne had the same Kinect-alike capabilities, so that 3rd parties can actually start using them, but sorry, you can't shove your product down the people's throat if they don't want it.

Touchscreens and mice turned out to be game changers instead of fads, because they proved to be immediate and reliable ways of input.

Voice and motion commands do have the potential to be aswell, but I feel the technology just isn't quite there yet, because even if those work 90% of the time it's not enough. They have to be extremely reliable, because these types of commands aren't repeatable anywhere near as quickly as the press of a button.

When navigating menus that might not matter too much, but in a game that's crucial.

Personally I'm a huge fan of body motion based games since the first Dance Dance Revolution that's why I'm aware how extremely frustrating it is if you feel your input device is buggy.

SSOOOOOOO not true at all..... mouse were laughed at when they first came around, and touch took years to be mainstream and accepted.... but like voice control I agree with you it still has to grow into something more natural and accurate to use effcicently

Did i say these techs were an instant success? Touchscreens were around for decades, but the first time it really clicked with customers afaik was with the iPhone.

I miss read the immediate part of your sentence my bad :D

bottom line the only way Kinect will work and be succesful is if MS start producing compeling software for it.... now the generation is Young and they have time to do so... it doesn't matter if it comes in several years as long as they are true killer apps and pave the way to an even greater Kinect 3

they just need a few amazing games for it to make it relevant....

I was never impressed. Voice commands on kinect are a joke. Games are not there. They should implement Cortana. Now that's impressive.

My guess is they were saving that for a Halo themed console.

On topic I think MS really dropped the ball this time around with Kinect. They packed it in with the console and didn't even bother to make games for it. I'm still going to buy an X1 with Kinect so I can use Skype and other things with it.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

"Please let's not give Sony credit for something it doesn't deserve"

"The move isn't a bad device. It's just a HD Wii"

Apparently, when Sony does it.. it's only HD technology. But when Microsoft pretty much does the same thing, it gets called "innovation" seeing how Kinect is pretty much an HD Eye-Toy with little upgrades and more precision. Why did nobody call Sony's EyeToy innovation when it came out several years before Kinect? EyeToy was further upgraded into Playstation Eye and later Playstation 4 Camera (which ironically was ridiculed copying Kinect even though it's an optional device like Eyetoy)

Neither Sony nor Microsoft innovated much in comparison to Nintendo. Microsoft (Mainstreamed) console online gaming. One of Nintendo's many innovations/upgrades is a proper analog stick. Sony quickly added a second Analog Stick to perfect the half-assed Nintendo concept, they also pushed the industry forward with Playstation by mainstreaming Mature/3D gaming and appealing to much larger audience. They had the balls to mainstream laser disk based technology which would become the standard for over 2 decades. The original Playstation made the impossible given Sony's lack of experience in the medium.

But in the end, Innovation remains a tricky word..

I'm sorry but comparing move to kinect is like comparing the steam engine to combustion engine.... yeah they serve the same purpose and provide the same end result.... but they are vastly different non the less

what sony implemented was nothing new whether it was with eye toy or move even though it is a really nice thing to implement in gaming but when it comes to kinect it is technologically a completely new way of approching the motion tracking field at that price tag....

they all have addavnced the gaming industry in their own way but it hasn't always been through innovation, just by perfecting things and implementing them in a better way which is just as important if not more  than raw innovation as the dawnfall of kinect proved painfully :)

The Move is beyond the Kinect. The Kinect just has better developers working on games for it and more hype. The Move can play core titles smoothly, the Kinect cannot. The possibilities of manipulating 3D realms is also available to those who use the move. The Kinect cannot accomplish this.

Seriously stop with that, kinect is a useless machine. If you want a console to watch tv and use voice comands then good for you, you can still buy kinect separately but there's people that likes the xbox brand, some exclusive games that are only on it like Halo and gears of war and don't want te fucking kinect.

Microsoft has at last understood that.

Honestly, i dont see how "gamers" lose at all on this. If anything the multi-media fans lose on this. There is no Star trek here. In star trek you give instructions to a computer AI, not a games console.
Also, motion controls have been around for many years now and have only proved that they were a fad. You let your dreams overcome your perception of reality. Its not very different from what some are doing with VR goggle technology. This is not what you want it to be.

"So gamers will be regulated to once again just be the couch potato sit there and push buttons like a worker in the movie "Metropolis." So perhaps this is a victory for the makers of chips, junk food and soda pop! Personally I would rather be like "Iron Man's" Tony Stark working with a computer than like a Darlek from "Doctor Who" imprisoned by one. So weak that we are unable to function without the computers that at one time served us."

You probably shouldn't overshadow any tangible points you want to make with silly rhetoric like that. It does your credibility no good. Those associations are ridiculous and you know it. I hope they were meant in jest.

Also, the idea of blaming consumers for not being impressed with Kinect is deplorable. People buy products for what they are in the present, not for unrealized potential. It is up to Microsoft to make Kinect attractive to consumers.

Don't worry PS4 will have Project Morpheus and PS Move. Microsoft have just given up on innovation by playing catch up and copying the market leader. Now literally nothing stands the xbox one apart from the PS4 except for being less powerful

Was Kinect really innovative?

You can't force people into a specific way of gaming. Freedom is important and doing well in an environment where people actually want your product, that's innovation. If you have to force people to buy your add-on, then it's terrible and not innovative.

That said I'm looking forward to the games we'll see on XB1 in the future.

P.S. Ryse was suppose to only use Kinect controls and look at how crappy it turned out. Meanwhile Smash Bros for Wii plays better with traditional gamecube controllers.

Yes, Kinect was the most innovated thing to happen to computers since the mouse came out.  Name one other thing that has been innovative?  (Touch screens were out in the 70s.)

Ryse is a fun game.  It does seemed rushed, but a good game none the less.

There are plenty of fun games for the Kinect on the 360.

you really need to look up the difference between innovation and invention.

touch screens are the most innovative thing in computers in recent history because the way we interact with software will never be the same again.  kinect is a recent invention.  it could have been innovative but the market reject it.  because the market rejected it kinect isn't innovative.
