Forums - Microsoft - Disgusted with the loss of Innovation (Kinect)? (/rant)

I agree that it is a bad thing that the Kinect is being unbundled. Microsoft claimed that the PS4 was just an upgraded PS3 that offered little new, and that was true.

What a load of BS, every console is just an upgraded one with more features, the ps4 is way more feature rich then ps3 and will be even more as it evolves, please with this nonsense. Voice commands and multi-tasking ps4 can already do without a over priced gimmick.

The Wii, DS, Wii U, and XBox One all offered something that had a meaningful impact on gaming besides improved graphics.  The XBox 360 and PS3 both featured online modes that were vastly beyond what their predecessors did.  So, each of those systems offered some sort of innovation.  The PS4 does not.  Maybe some gamers are ok with that, but it's clear that the PS4 doesn't do anything all that novel.

Ah so Streaming, Multitasking are nothing new and LOL at wii-u what did it offer that was new please? X1? What did ti do that was new? Voice and kinect were not new. OS now is new, VR is new, all are tied to the PS4 and sony's strategy going forward. Social aspects, integration, play go, are all new nest gen features, seems your blinded by biased against sony. PS4's Online and OS infrastructure are Vastly beyond what ps3 offers, I can play games as they are downlaoding, they install in the background as I play, I can instantly stream, edit my gameplay videos, see what my friends are streaming./.......

What did 360 and ps3 offer that were new? Online gaming was not new lol.

Everyone console is just a logical improvement over the older model, ps4 is no differemt.

Innovation only matetrs if it is something worthwhile, what wii-u did and x1 were not, sales show that. Innovation for the sake of it is just that a waste,.

They should have had it as an option at the start instead of force feeding us with it. I don't even use it really accept the barcode option instead of codes is a gr8 addition. After being force fed it then taking it away is quiet stupid really, I for one am a bit annoyed @ buying the console with Microsoft adamant it was there to stay. If they'd said it's not required to work with machine in the first place it would have been fairer on day one purchasers. Anyway compensation for adopting something that is now an option should be microsofts way of saying sorry for lying once again.

I feel ya, man. Kinect isn't my thing, as I've yet to see anything I wanted to use it for, but I'd be upset if Nintendo got rid of the tablet controller on Wii U just because a noisy group was complaining about it, so I understand where you're coming from. If they'd actually finished developing their Illumiroom project, I think people would've gone crazy for the device. Don't know if you remember that, but it was the project that used the Kinect to scan your room and have some kind of projector extend the game screen beyond the edge of the tv screen, all over your room. That shit was so cool.

Thanks man!  From the responses I'm seeing in the real world, most people inted to buy the Xbox One with a Kinect.  So maybe the effect will be really slight.

Ah, the illumi room.  Yea, that thing was cool and it was using the old Kinect 1.0!  The reason I understand they pushed it back/delayed/canceled it because the cost of the projector was higher than they thought consumers would play.

Plus, Not sure how well it would work with dark wall, but a light coloured sparcly furnished room and you have a early Holodeck!

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

I agree, the effect will probably be slight. It'll give a decent sales boost, but like you said, it'll kill the innovation because developers won't want to make a game for a device that not everyone has. If the effect is small enough, it might not deter developers, but I'm not terribly optimistic.

I didn't realize that was Kinect 1.0! Maybe a few years down the road we'll see Illumiroom come back, or at least something like it. And yeah, my first though when I saw the thing was "holy shit it's a Holodeck!" Given the proof of concept Illumiroom provides, I think we'll see some sort of early Holodeck type product in the same vein by 2020.
