Games will be the deciding factor, exclusive ones. As yet, that hasn't been enough to get any victories for MS even with net pricing that is lower than PS4 (eg : XB1 @ $449 w/Titanfall = $390 console, free kinect, $60 game).

E3 should be interesting. I have a sneaking feeling that Microsoft doesn't have any surprises ready for 2014, but 2015 could start heating up. Whereas Sony played it pretty tight last E3.

well the rest of 2014 for ms is most likly sunset, qb, halo2a, and horizion 2  and chances are well get the games coming next year at this e3

I keep seeing posters peg QB for 2014.

This is from the studio that took 5 years to make Max Payne and a further 5 years to make Alan Wake. Unless it's officially confirmed with a set launch date for 2014, my bet is on 2015.

With the software thats coming, MS will have a strong chance of taking back NA. Or at least coming close. The race if far from over.

Isnt NA currently neck and neck, with both consoles sitting around the 3 Million units marker?

Or are VGC numbers decieving me?

Theres about a 320k difference in favour of the PS4.

3.1m and 2.8m

that first price drop wasn't due to removing BC.  That was a price drop on the original 60 gig model, and then they came out with the 80 gig model a little after the price drop, but it still had BC, it just didn't have some of the hardware so it relied on software emulation.  It wasn't until the 40gig model and the slim came out that they dropped the BC.

I also got rid of my 60gig model when the slim came out.  That thing cranked up the temperature in my room by like 20 degree's every time I turned that sucker on!

80g had the EE chip. The first price cut yo are talking about is was the discontinuation of the 20gb with the 60gb taking the lower price and the 80gb retailed for 599. Then in Nov (a year later) the 40gb release at 399 with no BC

I do have to wonder though, do you think that Kinect Sports Rivals mediocre performance had some form of influence in that decision?

I doubt that just one game would have influenced their decison.  But this is a good decision all around and now they have actually make some good games for the Kinect if they really want people to buy it.

No, I don't mean that Kinect Sports single handedly made them drop the Kinect, but that its lack of success maybe was the thing that finally pushed them over the edge.

If the game had become a success then they'd seen that as a sign that the people want the Kinect for gaming, but it not even selling 200k physical copies to date, might have shown them that for gaming purposes not too many people really care about the Kinect.

And since MS is hard at work to now establish that the X1 is a games machine first and foremost, it only makes sense for them to drop the peripheral that apparently not too many people really use for gaming.

Will there be a "no-Kinect" Xbox One SKU?

DJEVOLVE said:
Not going to happen. They will cut the price of xbox with kinect before getting rid of it.

Looks like most of vgc got this one...right! That was only a few months ago though, so you guys don't deserve too much credit. I mean, even Polygon had figured it out by then!

edit:  earlier thread, vgc not so right here!

What happens when MS inevitably drops Kinect?

KHlover said:
The same what will happen once Nintendo drops the WiiU gamepad.

Nothing, because it won't happen at all.
ArnoldRimmer said:
I just don't believe that they will drop Kinect.

Kinect is the one area where Xbone offers something relatively new and different.
Drop Kinect, and what's left behind is pretty much just a weaker PS4. In such a scenario, why should people go for the second best choice, unless it's at least significantly cheaper? And just trying to be cheapest is not the best business model. Much better to offer something that the competition doesn't.
Rogerioandrade said:
They won´t do it. If they drop kinect anyday, they´ll be droping the console market for sure.
tiffac said:
MS will not drop Kinect, the same reason they will not get out of the Japanese market.

They built the X1 strategy around Kinect and removing it will just show they have no faith in their own product and that is a PR disaster waiting to happen.

So its unlikely KInect will be dropped. They will probably do a price drop and just take the loses, if they fall way behind in the sales game and that's a big IF and depends what way behind is to them.

They cant drop Kinect without bringing out a new Xbox Mister OP.

There are 5 Co processors built onto the GPU specifically for Kinect. What do suggest? To please 0.001% of people on the internet they redesign the whole Xbox One now?

fireburn95 said:
They aren't gonna drop kinect, kinect function is pretty much included in all games, and some may require it for stupid voice commands, plus how expensive can kinect be to make, current gen kinect is being sold at £10 brand new at my local GAME store
JayWood2010 said:

Honestly i dont expect them to drop Kinect as it is a selling point for XBO, not a liability.  Plus XBO is selling for a profit. It isn't "The all in one, Xbox One" without Kinect. Regardless of what the numbers say and who sold the most, XBO will likely be making more money than PS4 unless the attatch rate is super high for PS4.

nsignific said:
They won't drop the Kinect. It makes no sense to say that they will.
If they lag behind with sales - they will drop price, of course. But they will never drop Kinect.

who is this person??

Sal.Paradise said:

The price goes down and their sales increase. By then I think everyone except the MS diehards will have forgotten the Kinect-being-core-to-the-experience marketing spiel, and I'm sure those diehards will be more pleased with the sales increase than the squandering of the infinitepossibilities of mandatory kinect integration, so I doubt many will care.

And who is this gorgeous person??

Polygon: Microsoft needs to admit the Xbox One Kinect is a peripheral, not a pack-in

selnor1983 said:
People need to admit that Kinect is a pack in, not a peripheral. This is not Playstation.

oops

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLTRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

.

Now, this is not a mega-ton, this is somewhere between a giga-ton and a tera-ton, so the OP should be updated :P

The battle (for NA and one place in the Europe region [the UK]) really begins!

Thanks jlmurph!

was that golden egg the $100 price drop in less than a year?  Or the less reliable hardware?  Or lack of games available early on?  Early adopters always get screwed in one way or another.  Early adopters paid for the ps3 paid $300 more than what most people paid for their ps3's.

What?  The PS3 hardware less reliable than the 360?  Was this in some alternate universe where the RRoD didn't exist?

I guess it is the same universe that I mentioned the 360...

We are talking about early adopters vs late adopters fyi, not ps3 vs 360
