Forums - Nintendo - Was Dk:Tropical Freeze's Difficulty the main reason it did not sell that well?

I think DKC:TF is selling just fine -- especially as a WiiU game. Platformer fatigue may be it, but I'm pretty certain this game will grow legs.

I think rumors of this games difficulty are greatly exaggerated. There's just some who don't learn how to grind this game to get lots of extra coins, bananas, and puzzle pieces. And people who refuse to go to the item shop to get extra hearts and the Squaks the puzzle-piece finding bird.

It's a much easier game than NSMBU.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

It's not selling well because it's not what people wanted at the time, it has a stupid name that sounds like a spin-off, and the Wii U is selling like crap. Difficulty is not an issue.

Retro should have made a shooter or a Metroid or something. Having Mario and DK a few months apart was stupid. I bought Mario, I have no need for DK right now. I will pick it up down the road.

DKCR was a success. TF sold bad because it's on WiiU. If it ever comes, TF 3DS will outsell TF WiiU.

Its more to do with the limitations of the Wii U userbase than anything else.

That said, I wouldnt exactly say it hasnt sold well. 500,000 units in less than 3 Months on a userbase of ~6 Million is pretty good. Legs are looking promising also, if we actually look at the sales trend it has.

This game also shouldnt be compared to DKCR on the Wii, simply because when DKCR launched, it launched on a userbase of over 75,000,000 units.

It will continue to leg it towards a cool Million by the end of the Year.

plataformers used to did good in snes era, is like a fps nowadays.
but now, no 2d plataformer thats dont have mario in its name sell well.
look at delicious rayman legends...

dkctf is way better than dkcr, in my opinion. goty so far.
it is sad to see that good and hard plataformers dont apleal like before. it is still my favorite gender.

Bold 1: DKCR sold over 6 million.

Bold 2: XD Epic typo.

Still low if you compare to the almost 30M from NSMB wii.

XD, sorry, im not a native speaker. Im my country, the same word can mean both 'gender' and 'genre'.

Too bad. Fun game. But yes very difficult relatively speaking.

WiiU will end up being remembered as the cult classic console that never got the consumer support it deserved. Glad I have one. So many great games.

Dreamcast already has that crown. Vita will have it in 10 years time for being the handheld equivalent of the Dreamcast.

I agree though, if people buy systems for games, Wii U certainly has a lot of very good reasons to buy it right now. Perception of "doomed" is holding it back pretty much in the same way the doom shadow cast by the PS2 did the Dreamcast.

Finished 3D World last weekend, need to crack on with Tropical Freeze now. I'm up to World 2 and loving it so far.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Yup. It had NOTHING to do with the game being a Wii U exclusive and being yet another platformer!

Platformer overload on the Wii U, no real ad campaign, delayed until after Christmas, too hard may have played a slight part, etc. Plus, the DK franchise has been in decline. 6 million on the Wii is decent, but that's on a user base of 100 milion. The series really peaked in the SNES era, when the first two games were both in the top 10 bestsellers of that system (and the first game was the second best selling overall).

They should have made Metroid Prime 4 instead. Yeah, it's not like the Metroid series is a huge seller either, but it would have at least appealed to people who don't yet own a Wii U and the more hardcore gamers.
