Its more to do with the limitations of the Wii U userbase than anything else.
That said, I wouldnt exactly say it hasnt sold well. 500,000 units in less than 3 Months on a userbase of ~6 Million is pretty good. Legs are looking promising also, if we actually look at the sales trend it has.

This game also shouldnt be compared to DKCR on the Wii, simply because when DKCR launched, it launched on a userbase of over 75,000,000 units.
