Forums - Nintendo - Was Dk:Tropical Freeze's Difficulty the main reason it did not sell that well?

I think its cause it was the billionth platformer on a console full of platfomers.. Its like when you keep on eating chocolate and then you feel sick but the only thing thats left is more chocolate... Chocolate is great on occasion but when all you eat is chocolate, it doesn't taste very good

This^^ pretty much this! I always said that WiiU have too much platformers and/or cartonish things.Let's faced the "casuals" will not save the WiiU like they did with Wii.

WiiU needs the typical "15-35 male hardcore gamer" and they will not jump to WiiU only for cartoonish things(even if they like this genre)

They want third party support;

They want Zelda,F-zero,Metroid kind of classics and not mario,kirby,mario,DK,mario;

New ips that are not "for everyone"(AKA kids,grandmas,non gamer parents)

Drop the "family friendly" thing;

I dont think it sold that bad. For the userbase at any rate. 500k+ sold and nintendo games have long legs so its probably gonna pass 1mil lifetime. Not that bad.

I think it's too early to tell, for one thing. But I'm not as optimistic on the Donkey Kong franchise as many here. Certainly Retro probably (I haven't played it yet) did another great job with the franchise...but let's be honest. We've come to expect greatness from the studio. Mind blowing stuff, or as we fans like to call it: Metroid Prime. There are few games that have immersed us so deep and authentically in a game's setting.

And then they give us Donkey Kong...twice!

Meh!

Meh!

C'mon, Retro...you've got the talent, artistic vision, and backing...it's time to step up and deliver us again into Shangrila.

Fingers crossed for E3. Fingers crossed for another Metroid installment that will earn its place alongside Metroid Prime and Super Metroid.

But do count on Donkey Long to have legs...particularly this Holiday season and particularly when the price drops to $39.99, which I think it will.

This. Userbase is just and excuse. SS was released in Wii and it haven't crossed the 4m despite OoT doing twice with only 32M

I can play a dozen FPS, action games, adventure games in a row and not get sick of my chocolate. Why are plateformers different. Same with rpg fanatics and their games.

because platformers havent been that popular since 16bit days. Dont let the Mario numbers fool you

plataformers used to did good in snes era, is like a fps nowadays.
but now, no 2d plataformer thats dont have mario in its name sell well.
look at delicious rayman legends...

dkctf is way better than dkcr, in my opinion. goty so far.
it is sad to see that good and hard plataformers dont apleal like before. it is still my favorite gender.

Bold 1: DKCR sold over 6 million.

Bold 2: XD Epic typo.

Still low if you compare to the almost 30M from NSMB wii.

XD, sorry, im not a native speaker. Im my country, the same word can mean both 'gender' and 'genre'.

6 million sales is still a very respectable number though. It definitely qualifies as "selling well" in my book.

And no probs, I wasn't making fun of you. :)

no it sold bad because it was on Wii U

Basically this.

The previous Donkey Kong Country title sold over 6 million units, and was probably even harder than TF. If difficulty or stagnation was the reason, Returns wouldn't have sold anywhere near what it did
