Support Wii U and 3DS until late 2017.

Release the Nintendo Fusion in late 2017. Sold at a loss/competitively priced at $499.99.
Powerful, all-digital, micro-console with a 10 terabyte hard drive.
Powerful "Nintendo Tablet" capable of playing all games in 720p on-the-go.
GameCube inspired controller also included; connects to tablet and micro-console.
Rebrand Nintendo Network as "Nintendo Online"; $5 a month for $60 a year allows free Virtual Console access.
Competitive advertising.

Hardware is not used to make money; it is used to make games which make money.

That is the biggest downfall of your ideas. As much as I like the idea all digital would kill its chances outside of North America, Japan, Mainland EU and a few ther areas. It needs mass apeal, you cant cut off a majority of the potential purchases.

The answer obviously lies in regional bundles. I'd include a free cheeseburger with every USA SKU, because you know how much us Americans love us some cheeseburgers! For the ultra premium edition rare collector's edition SKU, I'd include a BACON cheeseburger!

For Japan, I'd throw in a bow of sushi. Europe is where it starts getting tricky. A teabag and crumpets for the UK? Wienerschnitzel for Germany? A bagel for France? NOE has been a roll lately, so I'd empower that branch to help me out.

Nintendo is now officially undoomed.

I was going to include a serious response, but there are plenty of good ones already. I particularly like Jumpin's ideas.

O people all i have read is merely fanboyism desires
Not actual solutions
First:
Someone has thought in something like check out something called brand objetives?????
as a brand extention the wii-U has some objetives to be accomplished
so First: check out the brand objetives
why???? as many of you had already pointed out this is the last Wii console
Wii as a BRAND is almost dead, so why spend a lot of money trying to posisionate the Brand.
From there on:
My new objetive is not to compete for market share
my objetive is merely financial
so to acomplish my financial objetives i need to focus into sell great amount of software
instead of great amount of hardware
Conclusion:
Iwata 1
Fans: 0

Thats all u would do? Discontinue Wii U and call it a day? Would u release a follow up, if so what would u do to make sure it doesnt sell poorly like Wii U?

Sorry if im coming off as an asshole but ur post doesnt really address what the op is asking.

wtf is up with the post i wrote? i cant even read it. im on my vita  and keyboard lags on this site. thats why i dont go into as much detail

Thats my fault, my phone keeps glitching and starts typing in ur comment

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

1) Create an account system. I absolutely refuse to spend a single dime on the eShop as long as games are tied to a console. This way you'd allow cross-buy with 3DS which you could advertise.

2) Create a "trophy" system like Nintendo Stars or whatever.

3) Release an open-world RPG in the Pokemon series where the GamePad is your PokeDex, you select you Pokemons with it, "shove" them to battle, etc. This way you could actually advertise the damn thing and show people that it is worth something!

4) Drop the bloody price of the Wii U! The console just isn't worth the price!! $80 is the perfect cut.

Unlike what you say, I'd stick to Wii U and try to turn it around. I think it would be easier than releasing a new console and starting to fight with a rampaging PS4 again, which can kill you just like it killed SEGA. The console isn't losing because it's bad. It suffers because it's too expensive for what it offers and has no games that the core audience is interested in, while the casuals have left for smartphones and tablets.
Cut $80 (maybe redesign to make it cheaper?), release the open-world Pokemon, a realistic Zelda, Metroid Prime, continue porting core GCN/Wii games and keep pushing indies. Nintendo also has to enter all the important markets! How can it be possible, that there is no Nintendo Poland? I haven't seen a Wii U on a shelf of any store around here! They have to be avaible at least in all EU countries. They should also hire small teams of people in each country that would travel around the country with a couple Wii U's to malls/events in which they could show the Wii U to gamers/parents. Follow what election experts tell you - a handshake is worth more than a TV spot.

When it comes to 3DS - it is starting to lose to Vita in Japan! That can't be good for it. They have to start thinking about a new console that would be slightly more powerful than Vita, while still being cheap and profitable at the same time. I should come out in 1.5-2 years.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

  1. Redesign the Wii U gamepad to be like the Cafe's original concept art: a controller with a small (4.5" is plenty) screen on it rather than a 6" screen tablet. This might reduce the console's price enough for a cut, but probably not. Even dropping the gamepad all together might not because there doesn't appear to be much hardware in it.
  2. Release Zelda U, Bayonetta, and X ASAP without compromising them, then focus on AA games, not AAA ones. Nintendo is basically in this game alone now, and they can't make enough AAA games to cover ANY consumer base on their own. They can make plenty AA ones.
  3. Cut a deal with Sony to borrow Legend of Dragoon: In exchange for advertising the PS4 and the Wii U operating together (the Wii U as a support console) we will have Monolith develop a Legend of Dragoon reboot (a sequel this many years later would be a waste). You'll get it on PS4, too (after an exclusive window) if we are guaranteed recouping our costs. Make a demo and plug the crap out of it at E3, being up front that it will be a timed exclusive. Just use the Monolith Soft logo to hide that it's really first party, not third party.
  4. If none of that works, bow out of the Wii U shortly after Christmas 2015. If the Legend of Dragoon reboot did well on PS4 but not Wii U, either go third party (for consoles, not handhelds) or drop consoles all together and go handheld.
Meanwhile on 3DS: DO NOTHING BUT MAKE GOOD GAMES.

Legend of Dragoon with Wii controls developed by the people who made Majora's Mask and Xenoblade Chronicles. I really think this would work. I also think that after 15 years of not touching it, Sony could be talked into lending it.

Release a new console and hand held in 2016 that are completely compatible with each other so they don't have software droughts.
I don't see anyway to fix the Wii U's current situation as it seems the console was meant to be a 2011 launch. So to me it was late on scene (tech was showing it's age) and poorly supported for it's first year (no real system sellers) a well planed failure is the best way to some up the wii u.

Bite the bullet and drop the gamepad for Wii U, allowing for a sizable price drop to enter mass-market territory and make the thing per-unit profitable. Build a Wii U successor with a Wii-like mentality where we completely ignore industry standards and go our own way (partnership with Google for Droid OS, though).

@bolded:  Yep.  This is what I said in a thread I made a couple of months ago, and I certainly didn't suggest it on a whim, either.  I realize that there are some issues to overcome by doing it but the positives that would ensue are just too good to ignore.

Unless Nintendo surprises us at E3 and shows software that proves the Gamepad as a bona fide, mass-market game changer, then offering an additional, cheaper SKU without the Gamepad this holiday (and selling the GP separately for people who want it) is their best option IMO.
