I'm watching my friend play Other M and it looks like Ninja Gaiden but with a Metroid skin. Gameplay seems fine, nothing amazing though.

As much as I love the Zelda universe, timeline, story, lore and everything about it, I'd have to say that the metroid Lore couldn't even fit into Hyrule Historia.

From a story standpoint, it's quite easy to explain, you've left some of the most important details out. First off, Adam (or the computer, as it were for the first part of the game) makes sense. The mission that the Federation sends her on is to follow the orders of the computer, which Samus notes in the opening cutscene (and perhaps somewhat telling is how reluctant she is to do so). That contrasts completely with deciding to follow the orders of someone for no real reason other than "gee I kinda miss Adam." The upgrade system makes sense as well; the computer notes on several ocassions that the downgrades take time to finish. Once they're finished, they're sent to Samus immediately; presumably the more powerful ones take longer to make, which is why you get them later. Regardless, this isn't Samus choosing to not use life saving equipment just because someone says she can't; as opposed to Other M, where Adam forces Samus to run through the majority of a super heated sector without the Varia Suit because of reasons. Fusion's definitely more linear or "action based" than previous titles, which is a sticking point for some, but it isn't for me because there's still very much an element of exploration to Fusion. While you're usually unable to get outside of a sector once you step inside, the sector is still very open and explorable and there's plenty of room for player discovery. Other M, on the other hand, is so linear that it makes Fusion look like something out of MC Escher. There's one strict path to the goal that you cannot diverge from whatsoever until the very end of the game, and the sectors themselves are incredibly straightforward with no room for any exploration. I don't think anyone complains about stacking beam upgrades, but it'd be hard for them to like Fusion if they did. And, finally, the big two differences from Fusion to Other M: Samus isn't an absolute wimp, and the story isn't incredibly stupid. Fusion's story is by no means an outstanding piece of literary work, but it was certainly attention grabbing, resolved all of its main plot points, and most importantly, gave a well thought out, well reasoned, and engrossing reason for Samus to go hunting again. Other M fails on all three of these levels. |
She decided to stick with Adam as she recognized that he is a good lider (and it was proved in the cutscene in sector zero), despite the past and her whinny. It was actually a smart idea as they are in a mission from the galactic federation while she was just there because of an alert.
Adam asked she help but need to be obedient. She accepted, and could refuse it and go from there, but after the first boss encounter she had to stay. All of you expect she to be like "hell to all of you! I'm going to do whatever I like!" instead of a more mature decision like what she did.

I liked the gameplay of both games. Especially the SA-X encounters are the best anything in ANY Metroid game. I've never felt a bigger sense of dread than during the SA-X scenes. As I never did any Sequence Breaking in the earlier 2D Metroid games and always followed the suggested path Fusion didn't feel too different in that regard. Bosses in Fusion were stellar.
Other M was a fun game to play. Yes, the story SUCKED BALLS and the authorization sometimes made no sense (Having Samus run around in the lava area without Varia upgrade for 15 minutes is just incredibly bad writing), but at the core the gameplay was pretty good. Sense move was fun, bosses were fun, level design wasn't too awful. Using missiles and doing the Find Waldo stuff was annoying, but if you had a hacked Wii you could at least map using missiles to the B button (in 3rd person, as it always should have been).
My verdict:
Fusion - 9/10
Other M - 7/10

I can totaly understand that it can be alot of ppl least favorite Metroid but saying it flat out sucked and that it almost killed the franchise is overdoing it. The atmosphere and immersion was great, gameplay was overall good (I only hated the moments where I had to go first person and look for stuffs), character development was ok (I liked to see a more human Samus despite everyone else saying that a Samus with emotions is blasphemy, for me it made her more real). It's only flaws for me was it's story, it did'nt make much sense to me, maybe I should replay it. Personnaly, Other M is not even the worst Metroid, that award goes to Prime Hunters. |
I agree. Prime Hunters takes the show. In my list of personal favorites.
10. Prime Hunters
9. Metroid 2
8. Metroid Other M
7. Metroid
6. Metroid Fusion
5. Metroid Prime 3
4. Metroid Zero Mission
3. Metroid Prime 2
2. Super Metroid
1. Metroid Prime

Fusion has a good story.
I don't care about the "Adam controlling you" aspect, it made sense in Metroid other M actually.

Yep. Make FP optional and let use missiles in third person.
